Triangle teams once again swept the ACC Player of the Week Awards, with Duke leading the way.
Duke freshman Gary Trent Jr. won Rookie of the Week and co-Player of the Week after scoring 47 points in two games. Trent tied the Duke freshman record with six 3-pointers in a road win at Miami, scoring a team-high 30 points. He then added 17 in a home win over Pitt. The freshman guard has hit 36 of his last 67 shots from 3-point range, including 11-of-16 this week.
Trent shared Player of the Week honors with NC State sophomore Omer Yurtseven. The power forward had 22 points and eight rebounds against Wake Forest and added 28 points and six boards against Miami. Yurtseven was 19-of-25 from the field this week.
Yurtseven is the first NC State player to win Player of the Week in two years. Cat Barber won the award three times in the 2015-16 season. He’s the first Wolfpack frontcourt player to win it since T.J. Warren, in 2013-14.
Trent is the fourth Duke player to win an ACC weekly honor this season. The Blue Devils have won 12 Rookie and Player of the week awards this year, half of the 24 honors the ACC has awarded so far this season. The Blue Devils have won at least one honor in eight of the 11 weeks and have had two winners in the same week four times.
Trent joins Marvin Bagley III (two Player and five Rookie), Grayson Allen (one Player) and Wendell Carter (two Rookie) as ACC winners this year.
It’s the first time four different Blue Devils have won an award in a season since the 2014-15 championship team, when Jahlil Okafor, Quinn Cook, Tyus Jones and Justise Winslow all won weekly awards.
The 12 awards so far are already fifth most in ACC history.
