Republican Pat Harrigan wins NC’s 10th Congressional race

RALEIGH — Republican Pat Harrigan has won the race for North Carolina’s 10th Congressional District, defeating Democrat Ralph Scott Jr.

The Associated Press has called the race for Harrigan, who had 58.02% of vote compared to 37.93% for Scott with just over 52% of precincts reporting.

The 10th District seat is currently held by Rep. Patrick McHenry, who announced he would be retiring in December 2023. He was briefly speaker of the House in October 2023, replacing Republican Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). McHenry was the second North Carolinian to hold the role of speaker; Nathaniel Macon held the spot from 1801-1807.

Harrigan initially announced a run for North Carolina’s 14th District, bumping up against North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore (R-Kings Mountain). He then shifted to the 10th District race alongside statehouse Rep. Grey Mills (R-Iredell). Harrigan defeated Mills in the March 5 primary to advance to the general election.

Harrigan served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Afghanistan. He became a Green Beret after being selected for Special Forces training. Harrigan has a degree in nuclear engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (2009).

Harrigan and his wife, Rocky, live in Fayetteville with their two young daughters.
