Republican Luke Farley is NC’s new commissioner of labor

The Republican will replace the outgoing Josh Dobson after beating Braxton Winston

RALEIGH — Republican Luke Farley has been elected the next North Carolina Commissioner of Labor, defeating Democratic opponent Braxton Winston.

Farley, 39, is an attorney with a 14-year background in workplace safety. He earned his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law and an undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill with honors.

Farley brings experience to the role having served on both the N.C. Human Relations Commission and the Durham County Board of Elections.

Of the two candidates running, Farley received the endorsement of the current commissioner of labor, Josh Dobson, and the longest-serving commissioner, Cheri Berry (2001-20).

On the key issue of whether or not the state’s collective bargaining laws should be overturned, Farley has said he doesn’t believe workers should be forced to join a union to keep their job and that he supports the rights of public sector workers or a workers association to take pay and benefit issues to their elected representatives.
