RALEIGH — Incumbent Congresswoman Deborah Ross has secured reelection for the second time to her 2nd District seat, defeating Republican Alan Swain.
Results are still unofficial, but with 30% of precincts reporting, Ross had taken in 68% of the vote to Swain’s 30%.
The 2nd District seat remained solidly Democrat-favored following redistricting in 2023.
This is the second time Ross and Swain have battled for the seat. Ross defeated Swain in 2020 with more than 65% of the vote when it was called by The Associated Press.
In 2022, Ross retained the seat, defeating Republican challenger Christine Villaverde.
Prior to heading to Congress, Ross served in the General Assembly; first elected in 2020 in the Wake County district. She was also a Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in 2016.
The 2nd District seat was previously held by Republican George Holding, who announced in December 2019 that he would be retiring. North Carolina’s congressional maps were redrawn that same year, which shifted the district in favor of Democrats. Ross, who ran unsuccessfully in 2016 for one of North Carolina’s U.S. Senate seats, was an early favorite to win in the 2020 race.
