College Basketball Roundup: Elon tops William & Mary

Gardner-Webb also won; NC A&T, ECU, UNCW and Campbell all lost

ELON — TK Simpkins scored 18 points as Elon beat William & Mary 76-71 on Thursday night.

Simpkins added eight rebounds and three steals for the Phoenix (13-17, 6-11 Coastal Athletic Association). Nick Dorn added 14 points and Max Mackinnon had 13.

Gabe Dorsey led the Tribe (8-22, 3-14) in scoring, finishing with 20 points. William & Mary also got 12 points and six rebounds from Caleb Dorsey. Chase Lowe also had 10 points and six assists. The loss was the Tribe’s ninth straight.

Dorn scored 14 points in the first half and Elon went into the break trailing 42-39. Elon pulled off the victory after a 10-2 second-half run erased a three-point deficit and gave them the lead at 72-67 with 2:19 left in the half. Simpkins scored 12 second-half points.

Elon hosts Monmouth on Saturday.

Gardner-Webb 72, Longwood 72-69

BOILING SPRINGS — Lucas Stieber scored 20 points as Gardner-Webb beat Longwood 72-69 on Thursday night.

Stieber shot 7 for 9, including 5 for 7 from beyond the arc for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (15-15, 10-5 Big South Conference). DQ Nicholas added 12 points with six assists, and Julien Soumaoro had 12 points.

Walyn Napper finished with 14 points and four assists for the Lancers (17-13, 5-10). Emanuel Richards added 13 points for Longwood. Elijah Tucker also recorded 11 points and nine rebounds.

Both teams next play Saturday. Gardner-Webb visits Winthrop and Longwood plays High Point at home.

Towson 84, N.C. A&T 58

GREENSBORO — Christian May had 15 points in Towson’s 84-58 victory against N.C. A&T on Thursday night.

May had five rebounds for the Tigers (18-12, 11-6 Coastal Athletic Association). Nendah Tarke scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Messiah Jones finished with 11 points.

The Aggies (7-23, 5-12) were led in scoring by Jalal McKie, who finished with 16 points. Landon Glasper added 11 points for N.C. A&T. In addition, Camian Shell had 10 points and three steals. The Aggies prolonged their losing streak to eight straight.

Both teams play Saturday — Towson visits UNC Wilmington and N.C. A&T travels to play Campbell.

Memphis 82, East Carolina 58

GREENVILLE — Nae’Qwan Tomlin had 20 points in Memphis’ 82-58 victory over East Carolina on Thursday night.

Tomlin also contributed five rebounds for the Tigers (21-8, 10-6 American Athletic Conference). David Jones added 18 points with 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Nick Jourdain had 14 points.

RJ Felton finished with 19 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates (14-14, 7-8). East Carolina also got 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals from Brandon Johnson. Cam Hayes also had nine points and four assists.

Hofstra 69, UNC Wilmington 58

WILMINGTON — Darlinstone Dubar scored 28 points as Hofstra beat UNC Wilmington 69-58 on Thursday night.

Dubar also added eight rebounds for the Pride (19-11, 12-5 Coastal Athletic Association). Jaquan Carlos scored 18 points and added six rebounds and five assists. Tyler Thomas finished with 13 points.

Trazarien White led the way for the Seahawks (20-9, 11-6) with 13 points. UNC Wilmington also got 11 points and five assists from Shykeim Phillips. In addition, KJ Jenkins had 10 points and three steals.

UNC Wilmington hosts Towson on Saturday.

Charleston (SC) 96, Campbell 73

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Reyne Smith’s 32 points led Charleston (SC) over Campbell 96-73 on Thursday night.

Smith poured in 10 3-pointers (on 15 attempts) for the Cougars (23-7, 14-3 Coastal Athletic Association). Ante Brzovic scored 14 points and added six rebounds and three steals. Ben Burnham had 12 points as the Cougars prolonged their winning streak to eight games.

The Fighting Camels (13-17, 7-10) were led by Anthony Dell’Orso, who recorded 21 points and seven rebounds. Laurynas Vaistaras added 13 points for Campbell. In addition, Gediminas Mokseckas finished with 13 points.

Campbell hosts N.C. A&T on Saturday.
