One of the most secularized stories of the Bible is the story of David and Goliath. The ancient battle is referenced in sporting events, politics, and business strategy. The triumph of the future king of Israel over a terrifying foe has been reduced to an underdog story.
The real story is that God is mightier than our problems. Before David fought Goliath, he said to the great Philistine: you come “to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield” but I come “in the name of the Lord….” Some see the Biblical narrative that God triumphed over Goliath by guiding the stone of David. But, others see that David was the perfect foe for Goliath. The giant never stood a chance against the speedy, nimble, courageous and deadly-accurate David.
When we face adversity, this story reminds us that God is mighty. He also calls on us to face challenges that the world might handicap against us. When we answer God’s call, we will be victorious.
1 Samuel 17: 40
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
