RALEIGH — Mobile phone users across North Carolina reported problems with Verizon Wireless services Friday morning. According to Verizon spokeswoman Kate Jay, the issue is being caused by a change to the Charter Communications network. “Verizon uses Charter Communications fiber lines to carry information between its cell sites and the core network in your area,” said Jay. “This morning Charter made a change to its network which impacted a number of our cell sites. Charter is working quickly to fix this issue.”
Verizon’s cell sites are connected to the carrier’s mobile network via fiber optic cables and Verizon sometimes partners with a fiber provider like Charter to carry calls, text, and data over their network to the mobile network. Today’s disruptions are due to issues with Charter’s fiber network.
Charter has not yet responded to requests for comment.
