Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Slings to Massive $117
Million Domestic Opening
Spider-Man is officially a box office overachiever. As of
Sunday morning, the latest cinematic depiction of the
webbed-hero, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” is looking at a $117
million opening from 4,348 locations. $10.6 million of the
domestic total came from 392 Imax screens. That’s a huge win for
Sony, Columbia Pictures, and Marvel Studios for the film, which
cost roughly $175 million to produce. The anticipated opening
weekend is higher than industry estimates, which were in the $90
million to $110 million range, while the studio cautiously
pegged it at $80 million.
Thirty years on, U2 still find relevance in ‘The Joshua
Tree’
Irish rock group U2 kicked off the European leg of “The
Joshua Tree” tour on Saturday by returning to the album that
tackled their love-hate relationship with America and propelled
them to superstardom when it was released 30 years ago. The
band, led by 57-year-old singer Bono, is playing the entire
record to 2.4 million fans on their 2017 tour, including hits
“With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m
looking For.”
Shia LaBeouf arrested in Georgia on disorderly conduct
charge
Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested in Georgia on charges of
disorderly conduct and public intoxication early on Saturday
after he became unruly in downtown Savannah, police said.
LaBeouf, best known for his role as Sam Witwicky in the
“Transformers” action movie franchise, was in the bustling City
Market neighborhood before dawn when he approached a bystander
and a police officer and asked for a cigarette, Savannah police
said in a statement.
Olivia de Havilland sues FX Networks over depiction in
‘Feud’
Oscar-winning actress Olivia de Havilland filed a lawsuit
against FX Networks on Friday, saying she did not give her
permission to be portrayed in the miniseries “Feud: Bette and
Joan” and that her depiction in the show had harmed her
reputation. Lawyers for de Havilland, whose 101st birthday is
on Saturday, said the network and Ryan Murphy Productions did
not consult with her and that she is the only living person to
be depicted in the eight-part miniseries.
DiCaprio hails Mexican ban on type of fishing net killing
porpoises
Mexico on Friday banned fishing with gillnets in the
northern Gulf of California as part of its pledge to save a
critically-endangered species of porpoise whose cause has been
championed by Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio and others. The
snub-nosed vaquita porpoise has all but died out due to gillnet
fishing for shrimp and totoaba, a delicacy in Asia. Mexico three
weeks ago unveiled a plan with DiCaprio to protect the
diminutive marine mammal.
Adele cancels remainder of world tour with damaged vocal
cords
Singer Adele has canceled the last two sell-out shows of her
world tour due to take place at London’s Wembley Stadium this
weekend after damaging her vocal cords. Adele, 29, said she went
to see a throat doctor on Friday night, who advised her not to
perform.
