Ross announces retirement from NC House

Republican Ryan Moffitt will run for the Alamance County

RALEIGH — North Carolina state House Rep. Stephen Ross (R-Alamance) announced he intends to retire at the end of his current term. Ross made the announcement on his official Facebook page Dec. 4.

“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve the citizens of Alamance County in the North Carolina General Assembly,” wrote Ross. “After more than 3 decades in public service, I have decided not to seek re-election at the end of my current term in December 2026.”

Ross thanked his family for their support, specifically mentioning his wife, “who has been by my side since my first run for office in the early 90s.” Ross and his wife have four daughters. The couple reside in Ross’ hometown of Burlington.

“I love this community and closing this chapter is difficult, but I look forward to some rest and time with my family as we open the next chapter of our lives,” Ross wrote in closing.

Ross is in his sixth term in the House and is the chairman for the Commerce and Economic Development, Commerce and Finance committees.

Ross is an Elon University graduate and attended graduate school at NC State. He previously served as mayor of Burlington for two terms and was on the Burlington City Council for four terms. Additionally, Ross was chairman of the Piedmont Triad Regional Council of governments and was a member of the Alamance County Mayors’ Committee for Persons with Disabilities.

The same day Ross made his retirement announcement, Alamance County Chamber of Commerce Chair Ryan Moffitt, an attorney by trade and fellow Republican, issued a press release announcing his candidacy for the seat.

Moffitt’s announcement thanked Ross for being a “tireless advocate for Alamance County families, championing economic growth, education, and infrastructure during his time as chair of key committees like Commerce and Finance.”

Moffitt attended the College of Charleston, and Elon University School of Law and runs the Vernon Law Firm, P.A. He has two young sons with his wife, Ashley.
