“After a vote of the HD60 CEC, the Guilford County Democratic Party has selected Amanda Cook to serve the remainder of the term,” the announcement on the Guilford Democratic Party Facebook page reads.

A statement was issued on Cook’s House campaign Facebook page following the announcement.

“This moment belongs to all of us, to everyone who showed up, made calls, talked to their neighbors, and believed in Amanda’s leadership,” the statement read. “From the start, this campaign has been about lifting up voices that too often go unheard and fighting for a stronger, fairer High Point.”

In addition to being a member of the High Point City Council, Cook’s bio also says she is a “veteran public school teacher, and founder of The Teacher’s Edge, a nonprofit advancing creativity and leadership in education.”

The bio also says she served on the Interlocal Homeless Task Force and Guilford County Partnership for Children.

Cook is a graduate of UNC Greensboro and Gardner-Webb. She holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.

The selection was made after a candidate forum held on Zoom.

The candidate forum included Cook and the three other individuals who have announced they will run for the seat: former Guilford County commissioner Bruce Davis, former Guilford County Democratic Party chairman Joe Alston and Angie Williams-McMichael, a citizen of High Point with a background in education.

Cook’s nomination will be sent to Gov. Josh Stein for administrative approval before being sent to the General Assembly.

Brockman was arrested on Oct. 8 and was charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape/sex offense of a 13- to 15-year-old by a defendant at least six years older than the victim.

The former Guilford House representative resigned his seat less than an hour after a select committee was announced to look into his removal on Oct. 31. The original date on his resignation letter of Oct. 22 was crossed out and replaced with a handwritten date of Oct. 31.

Brockman was released from custody on Nov. 5 after his bond was lowered to $250,000 from $1.05 million.
