RALEIGH — Much of the talk after the NHL trade deadline was about what the Carolina Hurricanes had lost.
Mark Jankowski and Logan Stankhoven showed everyone what they gained.
Jankowski scored twice, Stankoven sparked Carolina’s woebegone power play and Scott Morrow got his first career NHL point to lead the Hurricanes to a 4-2 win over the Jets on Sunday at Lenovo Center.
“I think just really is a great way to start for them,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Obviously, they helped us with the win tonight, but just now they kind of can relax and go about their business.”
Jankowski opened the scoring at 18:05 of the first against the Western Conference-leading Jets by taking a pass from Morrow — playing in place of an injured Dmitry Orlov — and quickly snapping a shot up high past Connor Hellebuyck (23 saves) for his first goal with his new team.
“As soon as I turned and got my head up, I saw I had quite a bit of time and space,” Jankowski said, “so I was trying to get in as close as possible and then just try to sneak one by him.”
Morrow, playing his fifth career NHL game, earned his first point with the assist.
“Yeah, it was pretty exciting,” Morrow said. “I had to refocus a bit after, a lot of game left, but definitely cool moment.”
It didn’t take long for Jankowski to get his second.
After winning a puck battle along the boards, Jankowski crashed the crease and a Jack Roslovic pass hit his right skate. The puck settled on the goal line, and Jankowski freed his stick from Jets deadline acquisition Brandon Tanev and backhanded it in to make it 2-0 at 5:21 of the second.
Stankoven extended the lead in the third, redirecting a Shayne Gostisbehere shot with the shaft of his stick for a goal in his Carolina debut, giving the Hurricanes their first power play goal in four games.
“When I see that shot coming, you just want to get a shaft on it or something,” Stankoven said. ”It’s so hard for goalies to track a puck when it gets deflected, so that was just my goal there “
Frederik Andersen (20 saves) outdueled Hellebuyck, making a dazzling third period save on Kyle Connor and stopping Cole Perfetti on a breakaway to keep the score 2-1. He also got some help from his teammates and video review.
Taylor Hall saved a goal for Andersen when he held the post to block the vacant net on a Winnipeg wraparound attempt. Perfetti got one past Andersen in the second period on a redirection. The goal, however, was wiped away when it was determined the Jets forward’s stick was illegally above the cross bar.
The only blemishes for Andersen came in the final minutes when a bad-angle shot by Winnipeg’s Alex Iafallo beat him with 2:46 remaining in the game and Hellebuyck on the bench for an extra attacker. Seth Jarvis got his 25th goal in an empty net with 2:02 remaining, but the Jets scored again 70 seconds later when Andersen passed the puck right to Winnipeg captain Adam Lowry, who put it in the vacant net for his 14th goal.
Notes: Brent Burns played his 1,479th career NHL game on his 40th birthday. … Jarvis had a game-high six shots on goal. … Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele received a holding the stick penalty and misconduct in the third period.
