RALEIGH — North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Eden) has won the race for North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District over Democrat Pamela Genant.
The seat is currently held by freshman Democrat Rep. Jeff Jackson, who is in the race against fellow Republican Congressman Dan Bishop to become North Carolina’s next attorney general. Following rumors he was jumping into the attorney general race, Jackson announced he would not seek reelection to the seat following redistricting changes that made the seat favorable to Republicans.
Moore cruised to victory in the March 5 Primary with nearly 75% of the vote over the two other Republicans in the race; Jeff Gregory and Lillian Joseph.
First elected in 2002, Moore has spent 21 years at the legislature with ten of those years in a row as speaker. He formally announced he would be leaving the General Assembly and making a bid for Congress in November 2023. Moore’s heir apparent for the speakership role is Rep. Destin Hall (R-Caldwell), who is the first millennial to chair the powerful House Rules Committee.
Moore is an attorney by trade and earned his law degree from the Oklahoma City University School of Law (1995). Prior to law school, he received a Bachelor of the Art from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (1992).
