Republican Richard Hudson wins reelection to NC’s 9th Congressional District

RALEIGH — Congressman Richard Hudson was won reelection in the race for the state’s 9th Congressional District.

Results are not finalized, but with 86% of votes counted, Hudson has received nearly 60% of the vote, solidly defeating his challengers, Democrat Nigel Bristow and independent candidate Shelane Etchison.

Hudson easily defeated challenger Troy L. Tarazon during the March 5 Primary with more than 83% of the vote.

Hudson was first elected to Congress in 2012 and has won reelection every year since. Before redistricting shifted him to the 9th District, Hudson was elected to to the U.S. House in North Carolina’s 8th District. Hudson defeated Democratic challenger Patricia Timmons-Goodson in the race for that seat during the 2020 election cycle.

He currently serves as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Prior to running for Congress, Hudson was the chief of staff for Texas Rep. Mike Conaway as well as chief of staff for Rep. John Carter and North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx.

Hudson was part of Republican Richard Vinroot’s campaign for governor in 1996. During the mid-1990s, Hudson was a communications director for the NCGOP and would later fill the role of  campaign manager for Pat McCrory’s unsuccessful 2008 bid for governor.

A native of Charlotte, Hudson holds a Bachelor of Arts from UNC Charlotte. Along with his wife Renee and their son, Hudson currently lives in Southern Pines.
