RALEIGH — Rep. Matthew Winslow (R-Franklin) has been named the new conference chair for the North Carolina General Assembly House. He previously served as deputy conference chair.

In a statement, Winslow said it was an honor to serve as chair and he is “deeply committed to our community and the conservative principles that guide us.”

The Franklin County legislator will take over for Rep. Jason Saine (R-Lincoln), who announced he would not be returning to the General Assembly effective Aug. 12. The vote to advance Winslow to chair was unanimous, per House Republican Caucus Director Stephen Wiley.

“As your new Conference Chair, I am dedicated to upholding the conservative values that we all hold dear. I am committed to promoting fiscal responsibility, protecting individual liberties, and ensuring the safety and security of our communities,” said Winslow. “With your support, I am confident that our Caucus will continue to champion policies that reflect the will and best interests of North Carolinians.”

Winslow was first elected to his House seat in 2020 and won reelection in 2022 as an unopposed candidate. He is running to keep his seat this year and has one opponent, Libertarian candidate Gavin Bell.

District 7 currently includes both Franklin and Granville counties but had included parts of southern Nash County prior to map changes in 2022.

During his time at the legislature, Winslow has served on several committees including alcohol beverage control, banking, commerce, finance and transportation as well as the energy and public utilities.

Winslow is a small business owner of a custom home-building company called Winslow Homes. His business has done charitable work with Wake County’s Habitat for Humanity as well as “Homes for Hope.”

Winslow is active in his local church and lives on a farm in Franklin County with his wife and two children, Delaney and Hudson.
