College Basketball Roundup: UNCA wins, High Point loses in OT to tie teams atop Big South

Gardner-Webb and UNCG both got wins, while Queens and WCU suffered losses

ASHEVILLE — Drew Pember and Josh Banks each scored 16 points as UNC Asheville beat Presbyterian 71-69 on Wednesday night.

Toyaz Solomon made two free throws with 1:07 left to give UNC Asheville a 71-68 lead.

Pember added seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (18-9, 10-2 Big South Conference). Banks scored 16 points and added six rebounds. Solomon was 5 of 5 shooting and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line to finish with 14 points.

Marquis Barnett finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Blue Hose (12-15, 4-8). Kaleb Scott added 14 points and eight rebounds for Presbyterian. In addition, Kobe Stewart had 11 points.

South Carolina Upstate 86, High Point 81 (OT)

HIGH POINT — Miguel Ayesa scored eight of his 22 points in overtime to help South Carolina Upstate beat High Points 86-81 on Wednesday night.

Ayesa made a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws as South Carolina Upstate outscored High Point 16-11 in the extra period. Ayesa also made a 3-pointer with eight seconds left in regulation to force overtime tied 70-all.

Ayesa shot 7 for 9, including 6 for 8 from beyond the arc for the Spartans (9-16, 4-8 Big South Conference). Justin Bailey scored 20 points and added five rebounds. Trae Broadnax finished with 18 points.

Duke Miles, Trae Benham and Abdoulaye Thiam scored 16 points apiece for the Panthers (21-6, 10-2). Juslin Bodo Bodo scored eight points and grabbed 18 rebounds.

Gardner-Webb 85, Charleston Southern 77

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — DQ Nicholas and Caleb Robinson both scored 17 points as Gardner-Webb beat Charleston Southern 85-77 on Wednesday night.

Nicholas also had eight rebounds and six assists for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (12-14, 7-4 Big South Conference). Robinson also added six rebounds. Julien Soumaoro finished with 15 points.

A’lahn Sumler had 25 points and three steals for the Buccaneers (8-16, 4-7). Kalib Clinton added 11 points and six rebounds for Charleston Southern. In addition, Taje’ Kelly had 11 points.

North Florida 93, Queens 79

CHARLOTTE — Chaz Lanier’s 29 points helped North Florida defeat Queens 93-79 on Wednesday night.

Lanier also contributed nine rebounds for the Ospreys (14-13, 7-5 Atlantic Sun Conference). Jah Nze scored 22 points while shooting 7 for 13 (3 for 6 from 3-point range). Nate Lliteras added 13 points.

AJ McKee led the way for the Royals (10-17, 4-8) with 30 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kalib Mathews added 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals for Queens. In addition, BJ McLaurin had eight points and four assists.
