College Basketball Roundup: Dell’Orso, Campbell knock off Elon

App State, High Point, NC A&T, Queens and UNCW all won

ELON — Anthony Dell’Orso led Campbell with 17 points, including the game-winning layup with 1.5 seconds remaining, and the Fighting Camels beat Elon 69-67 on Thursday night.

Elon’s Max Mackinnon missed a free throw with 8.4 seconds left. Dell’Orso grabbed the rebound and drove through traffic on the right side of the lane for a go-ahead layup.

Dell’Orso added 10 rebounds for the Fighting Camels (11-11, 5-4 Coastal Athletic Association). Jasin Sinani scored 15 points and added five assists. Elijah Walsh had 14 points.

The Phoenix (9-13, 2-7) were led in scoring by Sam Sherry, who finished with 15 points and three blocks. Elon also got 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. In addition, TK Simpkins had 12 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Dell’Orso scored 11 points in the first half for Campbell, who led 34-28 at halftime. Walsh led Campbell with nine points in the second half.

Appalachian State 81, Georgia State 71

ATLANTA — Terence Harcum scored 22 points as Appalachian State beat Georgia State 81-71 on Thursday night for its seventh straight win.

Harcum shot 7 for 17 (4 for 10 from 3-point range) for the Mountaineers (18-4, 9-1 Sun Belt Conference). Justin Abson scored 15 points with 16 rebounds and seven blocks. Tre’Von Spillers added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Panthers (9-12, 4-6) were led by Lucas Taylor, who recorded 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Jay’Den Turner added 13 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks for Georgia State. In addition, Leslie Nkereuwem finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

High Point 93, Longwood 76

HIGH POINT — Kezza Giffa scored 24 points as High Point beat Longwood 93-76 on Thursday night for its 11th victory in a row.

Giffa added seven assists for the Panthers (19-4, 8-0 Big South Conference). Trae Benham scored 18 points and added five rebounds. Kimani Hamilton finished with 16 points.

Elijah Tucker had 22 points and six rebounds for the Lancers (14-9, 2-6). Walyn Napper added 14 points and eight assists for Longwood. Johnathan Massie also had 12 points and two steals.

North Carolina A&T 59, Hampton 58

GREENSBORO — Jason Murphy scored 13 points to help North Carolina A&T hold off Hampton 59-58 on Thursday night.

Murphy added seven rebounds for the Aggies (7-15, 5-4 Coastal Athletic Association). Jalal McKie had 12 points and five rebounds. Kyle Duke scored 12.

Kyrese Mullen had 18 points and eight rebounds to pace the Pirates (4-18, 0-10), who have lost 13 in a row. Jordan Nesbitt added 11 points and five assists.

The Aggies used a 15-2 second half run to pull away from a 25-all halftime tie and put just enough distance between them and the Pirates. Camian Shell scored eight of his 10 points in the second half and added seven assists for North Carolina A&T.

Queens 94, Eastern Kentucky 76

CHARLOTTE — Deyton Albury and AJ McKee each scored 22 points as Queens beat Eastern Kentucky 94-76 on Thursday night.

Albury also contributed eight rebounds for the Royals (9-14, 3-5 Atlantic Sun Conference). McKee scored 22 points and added five rebounds. BJ McLaurin had 12 points.

Leland Walker finished with 22 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Colonels (11-10, 7-1). Isaiah Cozart added 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Eastern Kentucky. Tayshawn Comer also recorded 14 points. The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for the Colonels.

UNC Wilmington 80, Charleston (SC) 74

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Trazarien White’s 25 points helped UNC Wilmington defeat Charleston (SC) 80-74 on Thursday night.

White had nine rebounds for the Seahawks (15-6, 6-3 Coastal Athletic Association). Shykeim Phillips scored 15 points and added six rebounds. Donovan Newby and Nolan Hodge both finished with 11.

Kobe Rodgers led the Cougars (15-7, 6-3) in scoring, finishing with 20 points. Reyne Smith added 18 points for Charleston (SC). Ben Burnham also had 11 points and seven rebounds.
