College Basketball Roundup: McMullen, UNCA knock off High Point

ASHEVILLE — Nicholas McMullen scored 19 points as UNC Asheville beat High Point 86-81 on Wednesday night.

McMullen had seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (16-9, 8-2 Big South Conference). Fletcher Abee scored 17 points, making 3 for 4 from 3-point range, and Caleb Burgess finished with 15 points and six assists.

The Panthers (20-5, 9-1) were led by Kimani Hamilton, who posted 29 points and three steals. Abdoulaye Thiam added 19 points and two steals for High Point. Duke Miles also had 11 points and three steals. The loss snapped the Panthers’ 12-game winning streak.

Davidson 72, Duquesne 59

PITTSBURGH — Connor Kochera scored 11 of his 19 points in the first half as Davidson beat Duquesne 72-59 on Wednesday night.

Kochera added six rebounds for the Wildcats (13-9, 3-6 Atlantic 10 Conference). Grant Huffman scored 18 points and added six rebounds and five assists. Bobby Durkin had 11 points.

Fousseyni Drame finished with 15 points for the Dukes (13-9, 3-6). Jake DiMichele added 15 points for Duquesne. David Dixon also recorded 10 points.

Both teams next play Saturday. Davidson hosts George Mason and Duquesne plays Saint Bonaventure on the road.

Western Carolina 71, The Citadel 64

CULLOWHEE — Vonterius Woolbright had 27 points in Western Carolina’s 71-64 win over The Citadel on Wednesday night.

Woolbright also contributed 11 rebounds for the Catamounts (17-7, 6-5 Southern Conference). Tre Jackson scored 18 points, and Russell Jones finished with 10 points.

The Bulldogs (9-15, 1-10) were led in scoring by Quentin Millora-Brown, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Elijah Morgan added 15 points for The Citadel. AJ Smith also had 11 points.

Texas State 63, Appalachian State 56

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Davion Sykes had 17 points in Texas State’s 63-56 win over Appalachian State on Wednesday night.

Sykes added 11 rebounds for the Bobcats (10-14, 4-8 Sun Belt Conference). Jordan Mason added 12 points, and Christian Turner finished with 11 points.

Terence Harcum led the way for the Mountaineers (19-5, 10-2) with 13 points and three steals. Donovan Gregory added 12 points for Appalachian State. In addition, Myles Tate had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak for the Mountaineers.

Presbyterian 77, Gardner-Webb 75

CLINTON, S.C. — Kaleb Scott scored 17 points, Marquis Barnett made a go-ahead putback with 15.8 seconds left and Presbyterian beat Gardner-Webb 77-75 on Wednesday night.

Scott added six rebounds and three blocks for the Blue Hose (11-14, 3-7 Big South Conference). Kobe Stewart added 14 points and nine rebounds. Samage Teel finished with 12 points.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs (11-13, 6-3) were led in scoring by DQ Nicholas, who finished with 19 points. Quest Aldridge added 16 points for Gardner-Webb. In addition, Caleb Robinson finished with 14 points and six rebounds. The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
