Queens, Davidson and Wake Forest all won at home

CULLOWHEE — Vonterius Woolbright scored 23 points as Western Carolina beat UNC Asheville 78-63 on Saturday night.

Woolbright had 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Catamounts (7-2). Bernard Pelote scored 13 points, and Tre Jackson had 12 points, going 4 for 6 from 3-point range.

Fletcher Abee led the way for the Bulldogs (5-5). Drew Pember added 18 points, six rebounds and five assists for UNC Asheville. In addition, Trent Stephney finished with seven points.

Wake Forest 83, NJIT 59

WINSTON-SALEM — Freshman Parker Friedrichsen came off the bench to hit five 3-pointers, scoring 19 as Wake Forest notched its fourth straight victory by beating NJIT 83-59 on Saturday night.

Friedrichsen made 6 of 7 shots and missed just one 3-pointer in his best effort of the season for the Demon Deacons (6-3). Kevin Miller finished with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds. Hunter Sallis had 14 points, while Cameron Hildreth and Andrew Carr scored 12 apiece. Hildreth grabbed six rebounds.

Adam Hess had 15 points to lead the Highlanders (2-7) in the first meeting between the schools. Elijah Buchanan scored 11 but made just 1 of 7 from distance.

Friedrichsen came off the bench to hit both of his 3-pointers, scoring 10 to lead Wake Forest to a 38-32 lead at halftime. Hess had 12 points for NJIT, which fell behind by 15 before going on an 18-9 run in the final eight minutes.

NJIT got within three points early in the second half. Friedrichsen’s 3-pointer pushed the Demon Deacons’ lead to double digits at 65-53 with 6:06 left to play.

Wake Forest has won 26 straight home games against nonconference opponents, dating to December 2018.

Wake Forest was coming off a 76-57 home win over Rutgers on Wednesday. The 19-point margin of victory is the Demon Deacons’ largest over a Power 5 opponent since beating LSU 110-76 in December of 2016.

NJIT’s roster consists of nine freshmen, one junior, one senior and five post-graduates — with four of them in their sixth collegiate season.

Wake Forest returns to action on Dec. 18 when it hosts Delaware State. NJIT travels to play Buffalo on Saturday.

Queens 112, Carolina University 64

CHARLOTTE — Chris Ashby scored 21 points as Queens beat Carolina University 112-64 on Saturday.

Ashby shot 7 for 11 from beyond the arc for the Royals (6-5). Deyton Albury scored 15 points and added five rebounds. BJ McLaurin had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Cameron Parker led the way for the Bruins with 14 points and three steals. Peyton Compton added 12 points and Marcell White finished with 11 points.

Davidson 79, Miami (Ohio) 61

DAVIDSON — Grant Huffman had 19 points in Davidson’s 79-61 victory over Miami (OH) on Saturday.

Huffman added seven rebounds and three steals for the Wildcats (7-3). Reed Bailey added seven rebounds. David Skogman finished with 17 points.

Ryan Mabrey led the way for the RedHawks (4-5) with 15 points. Darweshi Hunter added 14 points for Miami (OH). Bryce Bultman also had eight points.

South Carolina 68, East Carolina 62

GREENVILLE — Meechie Johnson and Myles Stute scored 15 points apiece and South Carolina held on to beat East Carolina 68-62 on Saturday.

B.J. Mack added 13 points for the Gamecocks (8-1) which shot 43.8% (21 for 48 overall). Johnson, Stute and Mack combined to make 14 of the team’s 21 baskets.

RJ Felton scored 15 points, Ezra Ausar and Bobby Pettiford Jr. scored 14 points apiece and Brandon Johnson 10 for East Carolina (6-4).

Mack’s 3-pointer with 1:22 left gave South Carolina a 62-60 lead and it never trailed again. Pettiford tied it after an ECU timeout before Mack made 1 of 2 foul shots with 37 seconds left for a 63-62 advantage. On its next possession, Ausar lost control of the ball underneath the basket and it went out of bounds. Ta’Lon Cooper made 1 of 2 fouls shots on South Carolina’s next possession for a two-point lead. ECU’s Pettiford turned it over on the Pirates’ next possession and Davis sank two foul shots with 4 seconds left for the final margin.

East Carolina rallied from a 35-28 halftime deficit and outscored the Gamecocks 12-3 and took its first lead at 40-38 on Ausar’s soft layup in the lane.

The Gamecocks turned an 11-10 lead into a 23-12 margin with 3-pointers coming from Davis, two from Cooper and Morris Ugusuk with each make off an assist as South Carolina worked the ball around the perimeter to counter the Pirates’ 2-3 zone.

East Carolina responded with a 12-3 run pushing the pace to get within 26-24 with 3:27 before halftime, but South Carolina outscored the Pirates 9-4 and went to intermission up 35-28.

Saturday marked the first time the Pirates had welcomed a Southeastern Conference opponent to Minges Coliseum since 2002 when ECU beat Ole Miss, 65-58.

The Gamecocks hadn’t visited Minges Coliseum since Jan. 13, 1988, when South Carolina defeated ECU 78-51. The Pirates now are 2-3 in home games against South Carolina.

Radford 82, North Carolina Central 74

RADFORD, Va. — Bryan Antoine’s 16 points helped Radford defeat North Carolina Central 82-74 on Saturday night.

Antoine also had six rebounds for the Highlanders (7-4). Truth Harris scored 15 points, while DaQuan finished with 12 points.

The Eagles (4-7) were led in scoring by Josh Smith, who finished with 19 points and two steals. Po’Boigh King added 17 points and seven rebounds for North Carolina Central.
