ECU gunning for first win of season

It has not been an easy season for the ECU Pirates as they’ve yet to win a game this season. However, they’ll get no better chance than tonight when they host an in-state matchup with the Gardner-Webb, an FCS team.

But the Runnin’ Bulldogs are not your average FCS team. Last season they claimed the 2022 Big South Conference Title and, after a close loss to the Tennessee State last week, will be looking to pull off a big win.

The Game

East Carolina vs. Gardner-Webb
Greenville
Saturday, 6 p.m., ESPN+

Records

East Carolina: 0-3 (0-0 AAC)
Gardner-Webb: 1-2 (FCS)

Head-to-head

ECU leads the all-time series 1-0. The only meeting between the two teams happened in 2019, with the Pirates smashing the Runnin’ Bulldogs 48-9.

Players to Watch

ECU running back Rahjai Harris: The Pirates have struggled at quarterback this season with Alex Flinn (26 for 50, 271 yards) and Mason Garcia (23 for 43 for 145 yards) combining for six interceptions over three games, so the Pirates need to commit on a run-based offense, and Harris is by far ECU’s best back.

Gardner-Webb defensive end Ty French: French is chasing history. After recording a sack last week, his 27.5 sacks sit just 2.5 away from the most in program history (29). Former Green Bay Packer Gabe Wilkins has held the school record since 1993.
