SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Vonterius Woolbright scored 22 points, Russell Jones Jr. added 20 points, and Western Carolina knocked off Notre Dame 71-61 on Saturday.
Woolbright added 11 rebounds for his 11th career double-double. Although he was just 5 for 20 from the field, he made 11 of 12 from the free-throw line. Jones was 8-for-11 shooting. DJ Campbell added 12 points for Western Carolina (2-0).
Leading 55-39 with 12½ minutes to go, the Catamounts went ice cold, making two of their next 15 shots as Notre Dame got to within 62-59. Freshman Carey Booth scored eight points in Notre Dame’s 20-7 run.
Notre Dame then went cold, missing several shots and going scoreless over the next 3 minutes as Western Carolina extended its lead back to double digits.
Booth led Notre Dame (1-1) with 20 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Fellow freshman Markus Burton scored 17 points and Julian Roper II had 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Catamounts took the lead 2 minutes into the game and never gave it back. They led 23-12 near the 9-minute mark before Notre Dame went on a 13-4 capped by Booth’s three-point play to get within 27-25. A three-point play by Woolbright, a 3-pointer by Bernard Pelote, and a 3-pointer by Woolbright started a 15-4 run that left the Catamounts with a 42-29 halftime lead.
UNC Wilmington 83, UNC Asheville 66
ASHEVILLE — Maleeck Harden-Hayes’ 16 points helped UNC Wilmington defeat UNC Asheville 83-66 on Saturday.
Harden-Hayes added eight rebounds for the Seahawks (2-0). Trazarien White scored 13 points and added six rebounds. Shykeim Phillips finished with 12 points and five steals.
Drew Pember finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Bulldogs (0-2). Nicholas McMullen added 10 points for UNC Asheville. In addition, Toyaz Solomon had nine points.
Both teams play again on Tuesday. UNC Wilmington hosts Columbia International and UNC Asheville hosts Carolina University.
East Carolina 77, Campbell 63
GREENVILLE — RJ Felton scored 30 points as East Carolina beat Campbell 77-63 on Saturday.
Felton had 11 rebounds and three steals for the Pirates (2-0). Brandon Johnson added 13 points while shooting 5 for 9, including 3 for 7 from beyond the arc, and he also had five rebounds. Ezra Ausar went 5 of 6 from the field to finish with 11 points.
The Fighting Camels (1-1) were led by Anthony Dell’Orso, who recorded 35 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Laurynas Vaistaras added nine points for Campbell.
Both teams next play Wednesday. East Carolina hosts South Carolina Upstate and Campbell takes on Virginia Tech on the road.
Wofford 99, High Point 98
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Corey Tripp made two free throws with less than two seconds to play and Dillon Bailey had 20 points in Wofford’s 99-98 victory over High Point on Saturday.
Bailey shot 5 for 11 (3 for 8 from 3-point range) and 7 of 9 from the free throw line for the Terriers (2-0). Kyler Filewich added 12 points and five rebounds. Tripp finished with 12 points.
Duke Miles led the Panthers (1-1) in scoring, finishing with 25 points and five assists. Kimani Hamilton added 23 points and nine rebounds for High Point. Kezza Giffa also had 21 points.
High Point plays at Queens on Tuesday.
Northern Illinois 91, Appalachian State 78
DEKALB, Ill. — David Coit had 27 points in Northern Illinois’ 91-78 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday night.
Coit also added five rebounds and six assists for the Huskies (1-1). Zarigue Nutter added 19 points and six rebounds. Philmon Gebrewhit finished with 18 points.
The Mountaineers (1-1) were led by Donovan Gregory, who posted 17 points. Appalachian State also got 16 points from Christopher Mantis. In addition, CJ Huntley finished with 14 points.
Appalachian State visits Oregon State on Tuesday.
