NC House Republicans fall one seat short of supermajority

N.C. House Republicans won 71 seats in the General Assembly.

WINSTON-SALEM — The good news for N.C. House Republicans is they won a total of 71 seats in the General Assembly – the bad news, however, is it takes 72 to earn a supermajority.

Tuesday night’s election results took down a total of seven state House incumbents: six Democrats (Howard Hunter, Brian Farkas, Linda Cooper-Suggs, Terry Garrison, James Gailliard and Ricky Hurtado) and one Republican (Larry Yarborough).

In several hard-fought races, Republican incumbents in redrawn districts were able to defeat their Democratic challengers. Those races include the southern Wake County seat of Erin Pare, the Guilford County seats of Jon Hardister and John Faircloth, and the Forsyth County seat of Jeff Zenger.
