Davidson tops VMI; NC A&T, Elon lose

CULLOWHEE — Bernard Pelote’s 18 points helped Western Carolina defeat Brescia 112-45 on Sunday night.

Pelote added six rebounds for the Catamounts (1-2). DJ Campbell added 17 points while shooting 7 for 13, including 1 for 6 from beyond the arc, and he also had seven rebounds and 10 assists. Russell Jones was 4 of 7 shooting (4 for 6 from distance) to finish with 14 points.

The Bearcats (0-2) were led in scoring by Tay Smith, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Linkin Lockhart added 12 points for Brescia.

Davidson 75, VMI 71

DAVIDSON — Foster Loyer scored 17 points as Davidson beat VMI 75-71 on Sunday.

Loyer added five assists for the Wildcats (3-0). Grant Huffman scored 15 points while going 7 of 12 (1 for 6 from distance). Desmond Watson and Connor Kochera each had 11 points.

Tony Felder finished with 22 points for the Keydets (1-2). VMI also got 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals from Taeshaud Jackson. In addition, Sean Conway had 15 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Davidson, which led 38-24 at halftime, was outscored by 10 points in the second half but held on for the victory. Loyer led the way with nine second-half points.

Iowa State 80, North Carolina A&T 43

AMES, Iowa — Aljaz Kunc scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Osun Osummiyi added 16 points and Iowa State cruised to an 80-43 win over North Carolina A&T on Sunday.

Kunc scored 12 points in the first half when the Cyclones (2-0) took a 39-16 lead. He had four points in a 9-0 run that made it 11-2 and it was 20-12 when the Aggies made their last field goal, getting outscored 19-4. ISU held the Aggies without a field goal for the final 7:40

North Carolina A&T only missed five shots in that drought but had seven of its 13 turnovers.

The Aggies shot even worse in the second half (24%) and finished with 19 turnovers and was a minus-19 on the boards, including a 17-5 difference on the offensive end.

Jaren Holmes had all 13 of his points in the second half for the Cyclones, who scored 23 points off turnovers and had 20 second-chance points.

Kam Woods led the Aggies (1-1) with 17 points.

Harvard 92, Elon 77

ASHEVILLE — Evan Nelson scored 23 points as Harvard beat Elon 92-77 on Sunday night at the four-team Asheville Championship.

Nelson added six assists and three steals for the Crimson (2-1). Luka Sakota scored 14 points, shooting 4 for 6 (2 for 3 from 3-point range) and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line. Samuel Silverstein shot 3 of 5 from the field and 6 for 6 from the line to finish with 13 points.

Torrence Watson led the way for the Phoenix (1-2) with 14 points and six rebounds. Sean Halloran added 14 points and two steals for Elon. Max Mackinnon also had 12 points and three steals.
