Queens improved to 2-0, while Western Carolina and Gardner-Webb are both still winless

BOONE —Tyree Boykin scored 20 points as Appalachian State beat North Carolina Central 79-74 in overtime on Thursday night.

CJ Huntley added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers (2-0). Terence Harcum finished with 14 points.

The Eagles (0-2) were led by Justin Wright, who recorded 17 points, six rebounds and forced overtime with a step-back 3-pointer at the buzzer. Brendan Medley-Bacon added 16 points and two blocks.

Appalachian State plays Tuesday against Louisville on the road. NC Central visits Liberty on Monday.

Queens 99, Clinton College 65

CHARLOTTE — Kenny Dye had 14 points in Queens’ 99-65 victory against Clinton College on Thursday.

Dye added five rebounds and three steals for the Royals (2-0). Gavin Rains scored 12 points and added 13 rebounds, and AJ McKee finished with 12 points.

Cameron Shannon had 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Golden Bears (0-1). Tyler Hammond added 15 points and Isaiah Stone finished with 11 points.

Queens visits La Salle next Tuesday.

Maryland 71, Western Carolina 51

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Sophomore Julian Reese finished with career highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds to power Maryland to a 71-51 victory over Western Carolina on Thursday night.

Reese sank 7 of 9 shots from the floor and all five of his free throws, picking up his first career double-double. The Terrapins improved to 2-0 under Kevin Willard, who was the head coach at Seton Hall from 2010-22.

Jahmir Young added 16 points for Maryland, while Hakim Hart scored 10. The Terrapins shot 44.3% overall but just 10.5% from 3-point range (2 of 19). The Terps had just 10 assists on 27 baskets.

Tyzhaun Claude topped the Catamounts (0-2) with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Western Carolina shot just 27% overall but made 7 of 28 from distance.

Maryland held Niagara without a 3-pointer in a season-opening 71-49 victory. Western Carolina didn’t surpass 50 points until Marcus Kell buried a 3 with 27 seconds left to play.

It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2005. Maryland is 3-0 all-time versus the Catamounts.

SFA 86, Gardner-Webb 71

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Nana Antwi-Boasiako scored 21 points as SFA beat Gardner-Webb 86-71 on Thursday night.

Antwi-Boasiako had seven rebounds for the ’Jacks (2-0). Roti Ware added 16 points while shooting 5 for 10 (3 for 5 from 3-point range) and 3 of 4 from the free throw line, and he also had six rebounds and five assists. Latrell Jossell was 5 of 9 shooting (2 for 3 from distance) to finish with 13 points.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs (0-2) were led in scoring by Julien Soumaoro, who finished with 14 points. Gardner-Webb also got 13 points from Quest Aldridge. Kareem Reid also had 12 points and two blocks.
