College basketball roundup: ECU, Davidson claim wins in Myrtle Beach

The Pirates and Wildcats will meet one another in a consolation game on Sunday

CONWAY, S.C. — Tristen Newton scored 18 points and had six assists Friday to lead East Carolina to a 73-60 victory against Old Dominion in the consolation round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.

Freshman Brandon Robinson added 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench while the Pirates went 8 of 16 from 3-point range and shot 54.3% overall as a team to bounce back from their opening round loss to Oklahoma. Coach Joe Dooley’s team will play Davidson in the event’s final round on Sunday.

The Pirates (4-1) scored the game’s first seven points, but it was an 11-1 run later in the first half that helped ECU build a double digit lead and eventually break the game open. The advantage grew to as many as 17 points and ODU never got closer than five in the second half while falling to 2-3.

Kalu Ezikpe led ODU with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Davidson 72, Penn 60

CONWAY, S.C. — Luka Brajkovic recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds to carry Davidson to a 72-60 win over Penn in the Myrtle Beach Invitational on Friday.

Sam Mennenga had 17 points for Davidson (2-2). Michael Jones added 13 points. Hyunjung Lee had 12 points.

Jordan Dingle had 13 points for the Quakers (2-4). Jelani Williams added 10 points.

UMass 93, UNCG 90 (OT)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Noah Fernandes had a career-high 25 points as UMass edged UNC Greensboro 93-90 in overtime on Friday. Fernandes hit 11 of 12 foul shots.

Trent Buttrick had 18 points for UMass (3-2). Rich Kelly added 14 points and seven assists. Dibaji Walker had 12 points.

Kaleb Hunter had 18 points for the Spartans (4-1). Dante Treacy added 16 points. De’Monte Buckingham had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

UMBC 95, Western Carolina 71

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Retrievers took charge with a 10-1 run to end the first half to take the lead, then outscored the Catamounts 44-29 in the second half to surge to the victory.

Darnell Rogers led UMBC (2-1) with 23 points and six assists while Keondre Kennedy added 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Marvin Price had 15 points off the bench for and Nick Robinson had 12 points and seven rebounds for WCU (1-3).

Ole Miss 74, Elon 56

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jaemyn Brakefield and Jarkel Joiner scored 16 points apiece and Mississippi breezed to a 74-56 victory over Elon at the Charleston Classic on Friday night.

Five different players had baskets as Ole Miss (3-1) jumped out to an 11-0 lead. Elon (2-3) closed to within 17-14 on three free throws by Zac Ervin, but Joiner hit a free throw and Brakefield buried a 3-pointer to ignite a 14-3 run and the Rebels never looked back in building a 37-21 halftime lead.

Darius Burford led the Phoenix with 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Ervin finished with 13 points. Jerald Gillens-Butler scored 12 off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting. Elon shot just 34.6% from the floor. Burford hit 2 of 3 shots from distance, while the rest of the Phoenix made just 1 of 14.
