Joel Ford appointed to vacant UNC Board of Governors position

Former state Sen. Joel Ford of Mecklenburg County

RALEIGH – Former state Sen. Joel Ford of Mecklenburg County was appointed by the N.C. Senate to a position on the UNC Board of Governors left vacant by the departure of Darrell Allison on Wednesday, Mar. 17.

Ford, who represented the Senate’s 38th district for six years, joins the board to fill the final two years of Allison’s term.

Since leaving the General Assembly, Ford has been a vocal champion of school choice, often putting him at odds with other Democrats. He joined the board of directors of Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina in Feb. 2019.

As a state senator, Ford spent six years on the Transportation, Transportation Appropriations and Transportation Oversite Joint Legislative committees and helped pass the state’s “Raise the Age” legislation.

The Senate voted 45-3 in favor of Ford’s nomination.
