College Basketball Roundup: App State upsets top-seeded Texas State in OT of Sun Belt quarterfinals

UNCG and Elon each advanced in their conference tournament games

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Justin Forrest had a season-high 28 points as Appalachian State overcame a blown lead at the end of regulation to beat Texas State 76-73 in overtime in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament second round on Saturday night. The Mountaineers will play Coastal Carolina in Sunday’s semifinals.

Michael Almonacy added 23 points for the Mountaineers.

Forrest made 14 of 17 foul shots. He added six rebounds. Almonacy also had six rebounds.

Adrian Delph had 16 points and eight rebounds for Appalachian State (15-11). Donovan Gregory added nine rebounds.

Texas State erased an eight-point deficit in the final 26 seconds od regulation, capped by Caleb Asberry grabbing a rebound and racing down court before hitting a contested pull-up 3-pointer as time expired in regulation to force OT.

Mason Harrell had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Bobcats (18-7). Caleb Asberry added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Isiah Small had 15 points.

Elon 69, Towson 48

Colonial Athletic Conference Tournament

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Hunter McIntosh had 13 points as eighth-seeded Elon romped past ninth-seeded Towson 69-48 in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament on Saturday.

The Phoenix face league champion James Madison in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Darius Burford had 11 points for Elon (8-8). Hunter Woods added eight rebounds.

Nicolas Timberlake had 14 points for the Tigers (4-14).

William & Mary 73, UNC Wilmington 60

Colonial Athletic Conference Tournament

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Connor Kochera had 17 points as William & Mary topped UNC Wilmington 73-60 in the first round of the Colonial Conference tournament on Saturday night.

Luke Loewe had 17 points for William & Mary (7-9). Quinn Blair added 14 points and nine rebounds and Jake Milkereit had six rebounds.

Ty Gadsden had 15 points for the Seahawks (7-10). Joe Pridgen added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Mike Okauru had 10 points.

UNC Greensboro 80, The Citadel 72

Southern Conference Tournament

ASHEVILLE — Isaiah Miller had 21 points as top-seeded UNC Greensboro defeated The Citadel 80-72 in the Southern Conference tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.

Angelo Allegri and Hayden Koval each added 13 points for UNCG (19-8). A.J. McGinnis had 10 points. Keyshaun Langley scored only three points despite entering the matchup as the Spartans’ second leading scorer at 10 points per game.

Fletcher Abee had 18 points for the Bulldogs (13-12). Hayden Brown added 15 points and nine rebounds, and Kaiden Rice had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Virginia Commonwealth 64, Davidson 52

Atlantic 10 Tournament

RICHMOND, Va. — Nah’Shon Hyland posted 12 points as VCU topped Davidson 64-52 in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament on Saturday night.

Jamir Watkins and Corey Douglas Jr. each had 10 points for VCU (19-6).

Hyunjung Lee and Kellan Grady each had 13 points for the Wildcats (13-8). Luka Brajkovic had 10 points.

Marshall 75, Charlotte 66

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Taevion Kinsey scored 23 points and Andrew Taylor a season-high 21 as Marshall beat Charlotte 75-66 to close the regular season on Saturday.

Jannson Williams had 11 points for Marshall (15-6, 9-5 Conference USA).

Jordan Shepherd scored a season-high 20 points for the 49ers (9-15, 5-11), whose losing streak reached eight games. Jahmir Young added 15 points and seven rebounds. Jared Garcia had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Thundering Herd improve to 2-0 against the 49ers this season. Marshall defeated Charlotte 75-67 on Friday.
