BOILING SPRINGS — Eric Jamison Jr. had a career-high 23 points as Gardner-Webb edged Winthrop 74-70 on Thursday night.
Nate Johnson had 19 points and seven rebounds for Gardner-Webb (11-14, 7-6 Big South Conference). Jaheam Cornwall added 17 points and Ludovic Dufeal established a defensive presence with eight rebounds and five blocks.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs forced a season-high 20 turnovers.
Charles Falden had 13 points and six rebounds for the Eagles (18-9, 12-2). D.J. Burns added 12 points and seven rebounds and Micheal Anumba collared six boards.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs leveled the season series against the Eagles with the win. Winthrop defeated Gardner-Webb 99-95 on Jan. 11. Gardner-Webb plays Hampton on the road next Thursday. Winthrop faces Presbyterian on the road on Saturday.
Thorpe, Jones lead UNC Asheville over Longwood
ASHEVILLE — LJ Thorpe and Tajion Jones scored 18 points apiece as UNC Asheville narrowly beat Longwood 73-71 on Thursday night.
DeVon Baker added 15 points, and Coty Jude had 13 points for UNC Asheville (11-13, 5-8 Big South Conference).
Jude made a 3-pointer with 1:57 remaining for a seven-point lead and Baker added two free throws at nine seconds to make it 73-69.
Christian Wilson had 17 points for the Lancers (10-17, 5-9). Leslie Nkereuwem added eight rebounds and Jordan Cintron had seven.
The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 against the Lancers on the season. UNC Asheville defeated Longwood 71-66 on Jan. 20. UNC Asheville plays Charleston Southern at home on Saturday. Longwood takes on Hampton at home on Saturday.
Gensler scores 17 to lift Campbell past Hampton
BUIES CREEK — Cory Gensler posted 17 points and eight rebounds as Campbell romped past Hampton 75-49 on Thursday night.
Austin McCullough had 10 points for Campbell (13-13, 4-10 Big South Conference) as did Messiah Thompson. Joshua Lusane had three blocks.
Jermaine Marrow had 22 points for the Pirates (11-14, 6-6). Ben Stanley added 15 points. Edward Greg Heckstall had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Fighting Camels evened the season series against the Pirates with the win. Hampton defeated Campbell 83-74 on Jan. 23.
Campbell plays Radford at home on Saturday. Hampton plays Longwood on the road on Saturday.
Delaware wins at Elon
ELON — Nate Darling had 24 points and Delaware defeated Elon 81-75 on Thursday night, extending its winning streak to seven games.
Darling made 9 of 16 shots from the floor for the Blue Hens (19-7, 9-4 Colonial Athletic Association), including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. Ryan Allen, Dylan Painter and Kevin Anderson all scored 13 points. Painter had six rebounds, while Anderson handed out five assists and added three steals.
Marcus Sheffield II hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 with six assists for the Phoenix (9-18, 5-9). Hunter McIntosh added 14 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Delaware shot 56% from the floor and 45% from distance (9 of 20). The Blue Hens hit 14 of 20 free throws. Elon shot 50% from the floor and 44% from beyond the arc (15 of 34). The Phoenix made 8 of 11 foul shots.
The Blue Hens improve to 2-0 against the Phoenix this season. Delaware defeated Elon 79-78 on Jan. 18.
Roland scores 27 as Northeastern beats UNC Wilmington
BOSTON — Jordan Roland scored 27 points as Northeastern beat UNC Wilmington 71-63 on Thursday night.
Maxime Boursiquot had 12 points and eight rebounds for Northeastern (12-13, 6-7 Colonial Athletic Conference), which ended its four-game losing streak. Bolden Brace added 11 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Shaquille Walters had 10 points.
Roland, fourth in the nation at 23.4 points per game coming in, made 8 of 15 from the field and 10 of 13 from the free throw line.
Marten Linssen scored a career-high 20 points for the Seahawks (8-19, 3-11). Jaylen Sims added 17 points and eight rebounds. Brian Tolefree had 13 points.
The teams split their season series. UNC Wilmington defeated Northeastern 76-74 on Jan. 18.
Northeastern plays College of Charleston at home on Saturday. UNC Wilmington plays at Hofstra on Saturday.
Roberts guides Georgia State past App State
ATLANTA — Justin Roberts scored 17 points as Georgia State topped Appalachian State 76-65 on Thursday night. Nelson Phillips added 16 points for the Panthers, while Kane Williams chipped in 15.
Roberts shot 5 for 6 from deep. Phillips also had three blocks, while Williams posted seven rebounds.
Damon Wilson had 10 points for Georgia State (17-9, 10-5 Sun Belt Conference).
Corey Allen, who led the Panthers in scoring entering the contest with 15 points per game, shot only 20% for the game (1 of 5).
The Panthers swatted a season-high 10 blocks.
Kendall Lewis scored a season-high 24 points and had seven rebounds for the Mountaineers (14-12, 8-7). O’Showen Williams added 17 points. Justin Forrest had 11 points and six assists.
The Panthers improve to 2-0 against the Mountaineers on the season. Georgia State defeated Appalachian State 69-60 on Jan. 2. Georgia State matches up against Coastal Carolina at home on Saturday. Appalachian State matches up against Georgia Southern on the road on Saturday.
Gibson scores 20, North Texas beats Charlotte
DENTON, Texas — Umoja Gibson scored 20 points as North Texas extended its home winning streak to nine games, topping Charlotte 81-72 on Thursday night.
Zachary Simmons had 17 points and seven rebounds for North Texas (17-9, 11-2 Conference USA). Javion Hamlet added 15 points and Deng Geu had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Jahmir Young had 21 points for the 49ers (14-10, 8-5). Drew Edwards added 16 points. Malik Martin had 15 points.
North Texas has a home game against Old Dominion on Saturday. Charlotte plays at Rice on Saturday. Pairings for Conference USA’s Bonus Play will be announced on Sunday.
Fleming Jr. late 3 lifts Charleston Southern over High Point
CHARLESTON — Phlandrous Fleming Jr. buried a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in the game and Charleston Southern rallied for a 66-63 victory over High Point on Thursday night.
Fleming hit 8 of 18 shots from the floor with three 3-pointers and matched his career high for rebounds in picking up his 10th double-double of the season for the Buccaneers (13-13, 7-7 Big South Conference). Deontaye Buskey scored 15 points and Nate Lewis pitched in with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals.
High Point, which trailed by a point at halftime, led 60-59 with 3:46 left in the game after a Bryant Randleman layup. Fleming answered with a layup and Duncan LeXander sank two free throws to put Charleston Southern up 63-60 with 20 seconds to go. Freshman John-Michael Wright hit a 3-pointer to pull High Point even with 9 seconds remaining, setting up Fleming’s game-winning shot.
Freshman Eric Coleman Jr. topped the Panthers (7-19, 4-9) with 15 points, while Wright scored 14 with 10 rebounds for his second double-double. Caden Sanchez scored 14.
Charleston Southern shot just 39% from the floor and 38.5% from 3-point range (10 of 26). The Buccaneers made 12 of 15 foul shots. High Point shot 42% overall and 30% from distance (6 of 20). The Panthers hit 7 of 10 from the free-throw line.
