College Basketball Roundup: Gardner-Webb tops Campbell

NC Central, UNCA, NC A&T, Davidson, Charlotte, WCU, UNCW all earn wins; High Point loses on the road

BOILING SPRINGS — Nate Johnson had 21 points as Gardner-Webb defeated Campbell 73-61 on Saturday.

Eric Jamison Jr. had 16 points for Gardner-Webb (12-15, 8-7 Big South Conference). Christian Turner added 10 points. Ludovic Dufeal had seven points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

Cedric Henderson Jr. had 13 points for the Fighting Camels (14-15, 5-12). Cory Gensler added 11 points and three blocks. Joshua Lusane had seven rebounds.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs improve to 2-0 against the Fighting Camels for the season. Gardner-Webb defeated Campbell 67-65 on Jan. 2.

Gardner-Webb matches up against Charleston Southern on the road on Thursday. Campbell finishes out the regular season against UNC Asheville at home next Saturday.

Blount lifts NC Central over Md.-Eastern Shore

DURHAM — Jibri Blount had 28 points and 18 rebounds as NC Central stretched its home win streak to nine games, getting past Maryland Eastern Shore 74-55 on Saturday.

Nicolas Fennell had 16 points for NC Central (13-13, 9-3 Mid-Eastern Conference). Deven Palmer added seven rebounds. Jordan Perkins had seven assists.

Ahmad Frost had 12 points for the Hawks (5-22, 4-8). Kevon Voyles added 11 points. AJ Cheeseman had 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles improve to 2-0 against the Hawks on the season. NC Central defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 69-64 on Jan. 13. NC Central faces Howard at home on Monday. Maryland Eastern Shore takes on NC A&T on the road on Monday.

Baker scores 24 as UNC Asheville tops Presbyterian

ASHEVILLE — DeVon Baker scored 24 points as UNC-Asheville topped Presbyterian 75-64 on Saturday.

Baker shot 9 for 10 from the foul line.

LJ Thorpe had 16 points and seven rebounds for UNC-Asheville (13-14, 7-9 Big South Conference), which earned its fourth consecutive home victory. Lavar Batts Jr. added 14 points. Tajion Jones had 12 points.

Zeb Graham had 18 points for the Blue Hose (9-20, 6-10), who have now lost five consecutive games. Cory Hightower added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Michael Isler had 11 points.

The Bulldogs made up a 10-point halftime deficit, outscoring Presbyterian 50-29 in the second half.
UNC-Asheville takes on High Point on the road on Thursday. Presbyterian takes on Longwood at home on Thursday.

Jackson powers NC A&T to victory over Howard

GREENSBORO — Ronald Jackson totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season to help North Carolina A&T slip past Howard 71-67 on Saturday.

Jackson sank 4 of 10 shots from the floor for the Aggies (14-14, 10-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) and hit 10 of 16 foul shots. Fred Cleveland buried three 3-pointers and scored 14, while Kwe Parker had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.

Freshman Wayne Bristol Jr. topped the Bison (2-25, 0-12) with 26 points, but he also had seven of Howard’s 30 turnovers. Zion Cousins added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Nate Garvey scored 11. Charles Williams had 10 points and was one of four Bison who fouled out.

NC A&T shot just 38% from the floor and 27% from beyond the arc (8 of 30). The Aggies also made just 17 of 37 free throws (46%). Howard shot 48% overall, 40% from distance (6 of 15) and made 15 of 25 foul shots.

The Aggies entered play a half-game behind front-running Norfolk State in conference play. The Bison saw their losing streak reach 15.

Davidson knocks off Rhode Island in overtime

DAVIDSON — Jon Axel Gudmundsson scored 23 points, Bates Jones made the go-ahead free throws and Davidson upset Rhode Island 77-75 in overtime on Saturday.

Gudmundsson went to the line with 57 seconds left on Fatts Russell’s fifth foul and tied the game at 73 before missing the second free throw. Jones got the rebound, was fouled and made both free throws.

The teams both made two free throws from there. A last-second heave from beyond halfcourt by Tyrese Martin went off the back of the rim.

Russell tied the game at regulation at 68-all on a 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds left after going 1 of 14 from the floor.

Gudmundsson made 11 of 14 free throws and had 12 rebounds and four assists. Kellan Grady added 21 points for the Wildcats (14-12, 8-6 Atlantic 10 Conference).

Jeff Dowtin led the Rams with 21 points. Martin added 17 and Cyril Langevine 14 points and 11 rebounds. Russell, the league’s second-leading scorer (20.2), had eight points on 3-of-17 shooting with five assists.

Rhode Island (19-7, 11-3) came in having won 12 of their last 13, including a 69-58 win over Davidson on Jan. 8. The Rams remain in second place, three games back of fifth-ranked Dayton (14-0).

Shepherd lifts Charlotte past Western Kentucky on late shot

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Jordan Shepherd hit a jump shot with a second remaining to lift Charlotte to a 72-70 win over W. Kentucky on Saturday night. The Hilltoppers were unable to get off a shot on their subsequent possession.

Milos Supica had 14 points, one of five 49ers players in double figures. Shepherd and Jahmir Young added 13 points apiece. Malik Martin and Drew Edwards chipped in 10 points each. Shepherd had 10 assists, while Young posted six rebounds. Martin had seven rebounds.

Carson Williams had 18 points for the Hilltoppers (18-9, 11-4 Conference USA), whose four-game win streak was snapped. Taveion Hollingsworth added 16 points. Josh Anderson had 15 points.

The 49ers leveled the season series against the Hilltoppers with the win. W. Kentucky defeated Charlotte 80-63 on Jan. 18. Charlotte (15-11, 9-6), which snapped its six-game road losing streak.

Wade pumps in 19 points sending Longwood past High Point

LONGWOOD, N.J. — DeShaun Wade scored 19 points off the bench to carry Longwood to a 57-54 win over High Point on Saturday night.

High Point’s Denny Slay II tied it at 51 with 2:03 left. After the two teams went almost 90 seconds without scoring, Juan Munoz converted a three-point play to give the Lancers the lead for good.

Wade made 4 of 6 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds. Juan Munoz had 13 points for Longwood (13-17, 8-9 Big South Conference), Shabooty Phillips distributed six assists and Jordan Cintron had three blocks.

Caden Sanchez had 13 points for the Panthers (9-20, 6-10), Slay scored 10 points and Rob Peterson III grabbed nine rebounds.

The Lancers improve to 2-0 against the Panthers for the season. Longwood defeated High Point 72-62 on Jan. 25. Longwood finishes out the regular season against Presbyterian on the road on Thursday. High Point plays UNC-Asheville at home on Thursday.

Dotson leads Western Carolina past The Citadel

CULLOWHEE — Carlos Dotson had 23 points and 10 rebounds as Western Carolina beat The Citadel 96-84 on Saturday night.

Dotson hit 9 of 11 from the free throw line. Matt Halvorsen added 21 points and Mason Faulkner had 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Western Carolina (17-10, 9-7 Southern Conference). Onno Steger added 12 points.

Fletcher Abee scored a season-high 28 points for the Bulldogs (6-21, 0-16), whose losing streak reached 16 games. Kaelon Harris added 22 points. Tyson Batiste had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists.

The Catamounts improve to 2-0 against the Bulldogs on the season. Western Carolina defeated The Citadel 86-82 on Jan. 4. Western Carolina takes on Samford at home on Wednesday. The Citadel matches up against Mercer at home on Wednesday.

Linssen’s double-double leads UNC Wilmington past Charleston

WILMINGTON — Marten Linssen had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead UNC Wilmington to a 68-55 win over College of Charleston on Saturday night.

Mike Okauru had 17 points and nine rebounds for UNC Wilmington (9-20, 4-12 Colonial Athletic Conference). Ty Gadsden added 13 points. Shykeim Phillips had 10 points. Jaylen Sims tied a career high with 12 rebounds but the Seahawks’ leading scorer was held to five points on 2-of-10 shooting.

Grant Riller scored 19 points for the Cougars (15-13, 9-7), who have lost four in a row.

The Seahawks improve to 2-0 against the Cougars this season. UNC Wilmington defeated College of Charleston 72-70 on Jan. 25.

UNC Wilmington plays Drexel at home on Thursday. College of Charleston plays Delaware at home on Thursday.
