NC Central wins at Morgan State; UNCA, NC A&T, Campbell all lose on the road

BOILING SPRINGS — Jaheam Cornwall made 8 of 13 3-pointers and matched his career high with 24 points and Gardner-Webb beat High Point 86-55 on Monday night.

Nate Johnson scored 17 points and Justin Jenkins added 15 for the Bulldogs (10-14, 6-6 Big South Conference), who led 47-20 at halftime and finished making a season-high 16 of 34 3-pointers (47%).

Eric Jamison Jr. scored nine points with 12 rebounds and Kareem Reid had 14 boards for Gardner-Webb, which outrebounded the Panthers 50 to 26. Christian Turner made seven assists.

Eric Coleman Jr. had 13 points and Rob Peterson III, Denny Slay II and Jamal Wright scored eight apiece for High Point (7-18, 4-8), which shot 40% from the field (21 of 51) and 4 of 14 from 3 (29%).

John-Michael Wright, who led the Panthers in scoring heading into the contest with 15 points per game, failed to make a shot (0 of 7).

The Runnin’ Bulldogs improve to 2-0 against the Panthers for the season. Gardner-Webb defeated High Point 79-76 on January 23. Gardner-Webb matches up against Winthrop at home on Thursday. High Point plays Charleston Southern on the road on Thursday.

Stanley powers Hampton over UNC Asheville

HAMPTON, Va. — Ben Stanley had 25 points as Hampton defeated UNC Asheville 80-70 on Monday night.

Jermaine Marrow had 18 points and seven assists for Hampton (11-13, 6-5 Big South Conference). Edward Oliver-Hampton added 13 points. Davion Warren had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

LJ Thorpe had a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for the Bulldogs (10-13, 4-8). DeVon Baker added 15 points. Tajion Jones had 14 points.

The Pirates improve to 2-0 against the Bulldogs this season. Hampton defeated UNC Asheville 88-86 on Jan. 18. Hampton plays Campbell on the road on Thursday. UNC Asheville plays Longwood at home on Thursday.

Longwood holds on late to earn a win over Campbell

FARMVILLE, Va. — Leslie Nkereuwen scored on a layup with just under three minutes to play for Longwood’s final points and the Lancers made it hold up for a 57-56 win over Campbell on Monday night.

A jumper by Shabooty Phillips and Nkereuwen’s field goal gave Longwood a 57-51 lead with 2:46 to play. Cory Gensler halved the Campbell deficit with a 3 and Phillips missed three jumpers before Jordan Whitfield hit two free throws with :39 remaining to get the Camels within a point, but Nkereuwen made a clutch steal with a second left to seal the win.

Christian Wilson had 9 points off the bench and JaShaun Smith blocked three shots to carry .

JaShaun Smith had three blocks for Longwood (10-16, 5-8 Big South Conference).

Gensler had 15 points for the Fighting Camels (12-13, 3-10). Whitfield added 12 points. Cedric Henderson Jr. had 10 points.

The Lancers evened the season series with the win. Campbell defeated Longwood 68-58 on Jan. 18. Longwood matches up against UNC Asheville on the road on Thursday. Campbell takes on Hampton at home on Thursday.

Florida A&M wins at home, beats North Carolina A&T

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — MJ Randolph had 18 points to lead five Florida A&M players in double figures as the Rattlers beat NC A&T 79-60 on Monday night.

Evins Desir added 15 points for the Rattlers. Brendon Myles chipped in 12 and Rod Melton Jr. and DJ Jones each scored 10. Melton Jr. also had 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Florida A&M (9-13, 7-4 Mid-Eastern Conference) posted a season-high 21 assists and Florida A&M totaled a season-high 54 second-half points.

Ronald Jackson had 14 points for the Aggies (12-14, 8-3). Tyler Maye added 11 points. Andre Jackson had 10 points.

The Rattlers leveled the season series against the Aggies with the win. NC A&T defeated Florida A&M 97-90 on Jan. 6. Florida A&M plays Delaware State on the road on Saturday. NC A&T plays NC Central at home next Monday.

Blount scores 20 to carry NC Central past Morgan State

BALTIMORE — Jibri Blount grabbed nine rebounds and scored 20 points, including the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds left, and North Carolina Central Beat Morgan State 58-57 on Monday night to win its fifth straight.

Malik Miller’s layup with 14 seconds to play put the Bears up 58-57 before the Eagles called a timeout. Blount made a layup and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Morgan State’s Troy Baxter Jr. missed.

Deven Palmer scored 17 points with six boards for the Eagles (12-12, 8-2 Mideastern Athletic Conference), who held the Bears to 39% shooting from the field (20 of 52). Jordan Perkins made six assists and Evan Clayborne had three blocks.

Baxter scored 12 points and had three blocks and Miller added 10 points with eight rebounds for Morgan State (13-13, 7-4), which saw its four-game win streak end.

NC Central faces NC A&T on the road next Monday. Morgan State plays Norfolk State on the road on Saturday.
