MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell recorded her 1,000th career victory on Tuesday afternoon to become the third Division I women’s basketball coach to reach the milestone.

Hatchell may have immediate company, however, as Geno Auriemma is bidding for his 1,000th career win as top-ranked Connecticut hosts Oklahoma later on Tuesday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Hatchell joined the exclusive club after the Tar Heels posted a 79-63 win over Grambling State in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She joined the late Pat Summitt of Tennessee (1,098 wins) and Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer (1,018) on the women’s side, while Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (1,082) is the lone men’s coach to officially reach the milestone.

Hatchell owns a 1,000-376 record, with 728 of those wins coming during her 32 seasons at North Carolina. She also netted 272 victories in 11 seasons with Francis Marion in South Carolina.
