East Carolina already had a women’s lacrosse program and a coach. As of Monday, it now also has a roster full of players. Coach Amanda Barnes announced the signing of 21 recruits, including four from North Carolina, who will form the foundation of the Pirates’ first team, which will begin play in the spring of 2018. “The young women that have committed to play at ECU know that we are striving to be a nationally competitive program and that we are all on a mission to get better at what we do in the classroom and on the lacrosse field every day,” Barnes, a former Duke assistant who was hired last June, said in a statement. “We look forward to working with this group of young women to establish an inclusive, open-minded and positive competitive team culture. Our staff eagerly awaits welcoming them and their families as members of Pirate Nation next fall.” The in-state recruits are Samantha Caputo, a midfielder from Middle Creek High in Apex who has scored 122 goals heading into her senior season, defender Lydia Carbuccia of Durham Academy, and Greensboro twins Mike and Trinity Mapp, who helped Ragsdale High to a 16-1 record and conference championship last year.
