RALEIGH — Recently unearthed yearbook photos from a Texas high school call into question some of the biographical information claimed by Democratic Congressman Don Davis (NC-01).
Over the years, Davis often conveyed his ties to the Tarheel State, including his campaign website stating he was “born and raised in Snow Hill.” His official congressional website bio includes the same statement.
Before heading to Congress, Davis served in the state Senate, and the same statements about Snow Hill were included in his Senate biography.
Yearbook photos obtained by North State Journal from 1986 to 1990 show he had lived in Irving, Texas, for at least some of his youth.
North State Journal reached out multiple times to Davis’ office, sending at least two emails to his Communications Director Kristina Aleksander, but requests for clarification on the discrepancy in Davis’ bio went unreturned.
Property and other public records show Davis’ mother, Mary Patricia Davis, lived in Irving, Texas, beginning in 1985 through the end of 1991. Per those records, at least one address for Mary Patricia Davis falls within a mile of MacArthur High School. The online biographical directory for the U.S. Congress lists MacArthur as Davis’ high school alma mater, saying he graduated in 1989. Yearbook images, however, show him as attending the school during the 1989-90 school year.
In May, Cook Political Report categorized Davis as being “the most vulnerable” House seat in the upcoming November election. Similarly, Roll Call said Davis was one of the most vulnerable House members and said his matchup against Republican and retired Army Col. Laurie Buckhout is a toss-up.
