RALEIGH — The Carolina Hurricanes locked up their emerging star winger Saturday, signing Seth Jarvis to an eight-year, $63.2 million contract, nearly $30 million of which will be paid in signing bonuses.
Jarvis, the 13th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, scored 33 goals with 67 points last season, his third in the league. He emerged as an all-situations player for Carolina in 2023-24, playing nearly 19 minutes a game while being deployed on the top power play and penalty killing units.
“Seth is a cornerstone player for our franchise,” Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky said in a press release. “He took another huge step last season, playing in all situations and displaying the skill and competitive drive that will make him a star in this league in the years to come.”
Jarvis, 22, played much of the last season with an injured shoulder but was still the Hurricanes’ most consistent winger, finishing eighth in Frank J. Selke Trophy voting and receiving votes for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which teammate Jaccob Slavin — who also signed an eight-year extension this offseason — won for a second time.
According to PuckPedia.com, Jarvis’s contract — while worth an average of $7.9 million annually — will only cost Carolina just over $7.42 million against the salary cap. That’s because, according to a report by DailyFaceoff.com’s Frank Seravalli, Jarvis and his agent, Gerry Johansson, agreed to defer money — a cap tactic the Hurricanes also used to a lesser extent on their extension with Slavin.
Slavin’s new contract, which will take effect starting with the 2025-26 season, holds an average salary of just over $6.46 million but will count $6.396 million, a cap savings of about $65,000 annually, according to PuckPedia. The deferred money and maneuvering done on Jarvis’ deal are more significant — it will save Carolina close to $500,000 a year against the salary cap.
Jarvis, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has 64 goals and 146 points in 231 career regular season games. In 40 career playoff games, Jarvis has 13 goals and 27 points, including nine points in 11 games this past postseason.
Jarvis’ new contract gives him the fourth biggest cap hit on the Hurricanes behind Sebastian Aho, Dmitry Orlov and Andrei Svechnikov. The Hurricanes selected Jarvis with the 2020 first round draft pick they acquired from Toronto for taking on and buying out the final year of Patrick Marleau’s contract in June 2019. The selection was top-10 protected, but the Maple Leafs were slotted at the 13th overall pick, leading to Carolina selecting Jarvis.
