College Basketball Roundup: Brown-Jones’ 39 helps UNCG knock off Western Carolina in overtime

CULLOWHEE — Mikeal Brown-Jones’ 39 points led UNC Greensboro over Western Carolina 85-82 in overtime on Wednesday night.

Keyshaun Langley made a pair of free throws with 4 seconds left in the extra period to give the Spartans an 85-81 lead.

Brown-Jones added nine rebounds and three steals for the Spartans (15-5, 6-1 Southern Conference). Langley scored 17 points and added five assists. Donovan Atwell finished with nine points.

The Catamounts (15-5, 4-3) were led by Vonterius Woolbright, who posted 34 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. Western Carolina also got 22 points from Tre Jackson. Russell Jones also had eight points. Charles Lampten’s layup with 4 seconds left forced overtime tied 70-all.

High Point 78, South Carolina Upstate 67

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Kimani Hamilton had 28 points in High Point’s 78-67 victory against South Carolina Upstate on Wednesday night.

Hamilton added 14 rebounds for the Panthers (17-4, 6-0 Big South Conference). Kezza Giffa scored 23 points and added five rebounds. The Panthers extended their winning streak to nine games.

The Spartans (6-13, 1-5) were led in scoring by Trae Broadnax, who finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Nick Alves added 14 points and six rebounds for South Carolina Upstate. Ahmir Langlais had 12 points.

UNC Asheville 81, Radford 69

ASHEVILLE — Josh Banks’ 19 points helped UNC Asheville defeat Radford 81-69 on Wednesday night.

Banks shot 8 for 13, including 3 for 6 from beyond the arc, for the Bulldogs (13-8, 5-1 Big South Conference). Nicholas McMullen was 8 of 9 shooting and added 18 points. Drew Pember finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Highlanders (12-9, 2-4) were led in scoring by DaQuan Smith, who finished with 15 points. Kenyon Giles added 14 points and two steals for Radford. Bryan Antoine also had 12 points and five assists.

UNC Asheville visits Charleston Southern on Saturday.

Davidson 84, Saint Louis 61

Grant Huffman’s 23 points helped Davidson defeat Saint Louis 84-61 on Wednesday night.

Huffman had five assists for the Wildcats (12-7, 2-4 Atlantic 10 Conference). Angelo Brizzi scored 15 points and added five assists. Reed Bailey finished with 12 points.

Bradley Ezewiro led the Billikens (8-11, 1-5) in scoring, finishing with 20 points and six rebounds. Terrence Hargrove Jr. added 14 points and six rebounds for Saint Louis. Sincere Parker finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Huffman scored 11 points in the first half and Davidson went into the break trailing 31-28. Brizzi’s 15-point second half helped Davidson close out the 23-point victory.

Queens 96, Central Arkansas 79

CHARLOTTE — AJ McKee had 28 points in Queens’ 96-79 victory over Central Arkansas on Wednesday night.

McKee added five steals for the Royals (8-13, 2-4 Atlantic Sun Conference). Deyton Albury scored 18 points and added six rebounds and six assists. Chris Ashby was 6-of-9 shooting (5 for 8 from 3-point range) to finish with 17 points.

The Bears (7-15, 3-3) were led in scoring by Elias Cato, who finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Masai Olowokere added 16 points and four assists for Central Arkansas. In addition, Tucker Anderson finished with 13 points and four steals.

Gardner-Webb 76, Longwood 64

FARMVILLE, Va. — DQ Nicholas scored 20 points as Gardner-Webb beat Longwood 76-64 on Wednesday night.

Nicholas had five assists for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (9-12, 4-2 Big South Conference). Quest Aldridge added 17 points while shooting 6 for 7, including 5 for 5 from beyond the arc, and he also had seven rebounds. Caleb Robinson had 15 points.

Johnathan Massie led the way for the Lancers (14-8, 2-5) with 13 points and two steals. Walyn Napper added 10 points and five assists for Longwood. Michael Christmas also put up nine points and eight rebounds.

Gardner-Webb’s hosts South Carolina Upstate on Saturday. Longwood visits High Point Thursday.

East Carolina 54, Wichita State 52

WICHITA, Kan. — Brandon Johnson’s 12 points helped East Carolina defeat Wichita State 54-52 on Wednesday night.

Bobby Pettiford Jr.’s dunk stretched the Pirates’ lead to 54-47 with about 3 minutes to play. Dalen Ridgnal missed a potential game-tying 3 for Wichita State with two seconds left.

Johnson also had seven rebounds and three steals for the Pirates (10-10, 3-4 American Athletic Conference). RJ Felton and Ezra Ausar added 10 points each.

Harlond Beverly led the Shockers (8-11, 0-6) in scoring, finishing with 18 points and six rebounds. Ridgnal added eight points and six rebounds. Colby Rogers had seven points. The loss was the Shockers’ eighth straight.

East Carolina went into the half ahead of Wichita State 26-22. Jaden Walker put up six points in the half. East Carolina took the lead for good with 7:13 remaining in the second half on a dunk from Johnson to make it a 45-43 game.

Virginia 59, NC State 53 (OT)

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Ryan Dunn scored 13 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked six shots and surging Virginia beat NC State 59-53 in overtime on Wednesday night.

The 6-foot-8 Dunn finished 6-for-10 shooting, committed just one turnover and was the only starter on either team that didn’t commit a foul. Reece Beekman scored 11 points and distributed six assists, reserve Taine Murray also scored 11 points, and Isaac McKneely and Jordan Minor each scored 10 for the Cavaliers.

Under Virginia head coach Tony Bennett, the Cavaliers have won nine of their last 10 overtime contests. The Cavaliers own the nation’s longest home win streak at 21 games. Virginia (14-5, 5-3) has held 46 straight ACC opponents to fewer than 70 points at John Paul Jones Arena.

Casey Morsell scored 13 points, DJ Burns Jr. 11 and reserve Michael O’Connell 10 for NC State.

Virginia led for the duration of overtime. Horne scored six of his points in overtime for NC State, the Wolfpack’s only points in overtime.

Morsell stole the ball from Beekman, who was working the lane with the hopes of putting in the game-winner at the end of regulation. Off the steal, Morsell took a couple dribbles and launched a three-quarter court shot that bounced between the rim and backboard to force overtime tied at 47. NC State forced the extra session when O’Connell converted an offensive rebound off a Burns miss to tie it at 47.

After a first half that saw the Wolfpack score just 15 points on 6-for-24 shooting and trail by 12 at the break, NC State turned a 35-21 deficit into a 41-40 lead by outscoring Virginia 20-5 over eight minutes.

NC State (13-6, 5-3) will try to snap its two-game skid when it travels to Syracuse on Saturday. With a three-game win streak, Virginia travels to face Louisville on Saturday.
