WINSTON-SALEM — Hunter Sallis scored a season-high 21 points, Andrew Carr recorded a double-double and Wake Forest used the second half to distance itself from Virginia in a 66-47 win on Saturday.
Sallis, in his second year at Wake Forest after transferring from Gonzaga, finished 8-for-13 shooting including 5 for 8 from 3-point range. Carr scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Kevin Miller added 14 points for Wake Forest. Efton Reid III scored nine points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked five shots for the Demon Deacons (12-4, 4-1 ACC).
Wake Forest shot 25 for 50 overall and 10 for 21 from 3-point range.
Reece Beekman was the lone Cavalier in double figures with 10 points and shot 3 for 12. The Cavaliers shot 16 for 57 (28.1%) including 4 for 12 (33.3%) from 3-point range.
The Demon Deacons led 27-21 at halftime and started the second half outscoring Virginia 10-2 in the first 3:35 for a 37-23 advantage and stayed up by double figures for the remainder of the game. Wake Forest continued to extend the margin and led 52-35 with 7:34 left.
In its five defeats Virginia (11-5, 2-3) has lost by an average of 20.8 points. Virginia entered having won 10 of its last 11 games against Wake Forest and had a five-game road win streak in the series.
Wake Forest travels to face NC State on Tuesday.
NC State 89, Louisville 83
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — DJ Horne drained six of the nine 3-points shots he took, scoring a season-high 27 points as NC State bounced back from its first Atlantic Coast Conference loss to beat Louisville 89-83 on Saturday afternoon.
The win marks the first time since the 2001-02 season that the Wolfpack have won their first three ACC road games.
In Wednesday’s home court loss to No. 7 UNC, NC State (12-4, 4-1) struggled offensively, shooting just 26.9% from the floor. Against the Cardinals (6-10, 1-4), the Wolfpack shot 32 of 59 from the field (54.2%), including 10 of 20 from 3-point range, and hit 15 of 17 from the free-throw line.
NC State held a 44-30 lead with a minute left in the first half, but Louisville rallied to score the final five points to trail 44-35 at the break. Jayden Taylor scored at the basket to start the second half, pushing the lead back into double digits, but the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run powered by two Brandon Huntley-Hatfield field goals sandwiched around a jumper and 3-pointer by Mike James to get within two, 46-42. Curtis Williams’ 3-pointer with 11:55 gave Louisville a brief 55-54 lead, and he hit another two minutes later to pull the Cardinals even at 58-58. Horne answered with a 3 and DJ Burns Jr. hit a jumper to put the Wolfpack back in front and they would not trail again.
Horne hit 9 of 14 from the field to lead the Wolfpack offense. Burns and Casey Morsell each scored 13 points, and Michael O’Connell was 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point arc and finished with 11 points and six assists.
Louisville returned home after winning its first true road game in more than two calendar years, beating Miami 80-71, ending an 0-22 streak.
James led five Cardinals into double-figure scoring, putting up 20 points. Williams hit 4 of 6 from distance to put up 15 points Ty-Laur was 6 for 6 from the foul line to add 14 more. Huntley-Hatfield put up a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Skyy Clark added 10 points.
NC State returns home to play host to Wake Forest Tuesday. Louisville plays at UNC on Wednesday.
Western Carolina 64, Mercer 52
MACON, Ga. (AP) — Vonterius Woolbright’s 14 points helped Western Carolina defeat Mercer 64-52 on Saturday.
Woolbright had 15 rebounds for the Catamounts (15-2, 4-0 Southern Conference). Russell Jones scored 14 points, shooting 6 for 10, including 2 for 4 from beyond the arc. Tre Jackson added 10 points for the Catamounts, who extended their winning streak to nine games.
David Thomas led the way for the Bears (8-9, 1-3) with 12 points and four assists. Jalyn McCreary added 11 points for Mercer. In addition, Jah Quinones had eight points and four assists.
Western Carolina took the lead with 4:14 left in the first half and did not give it up. The score was 29-25 at halftime, with Woolbright racking up nine points. Western Carolina pulled away with a 14-2 run in the second half to extend a six-point lead to 18 points.
Gardner-Webb 76, Presbyterian 60
BOILING SPRINGS — DQ Nicholas had 17 points in Gardner-Webb’s 76-60 victory over Presbyterian on Saturday.
Nicholas shot 7 for 13, including 2 for 5 from 3-point range, for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (6-12, 1-2 Big South Conference). Julien Soumaoro added 15 points, and Caleb Robinson had 10. The Runnin’ Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing skid.
The Blue Hose (9-10, 1-3) were led by Samage Teel, who posted 14 points. Marquis Barnett added 13 points, six rebounds and three steals for Presbyterian. In addition, Kory Mincy finished with nine points.
UNC Asheville 65, Longwood 61
ASHEVILLE — Trent Stephney had 15 points in UNC Asheville’s 65-61 victory against Longwood on Saturday.
Stephney also had five assists for the Bulldogs (11-8, 3-1 Big South Conference). Josh Banks added 13 points, while Drew Pember finished with 12 points on an off night for the reigning Big South player of the year.
Szymon Zapala finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Lancers (13-6, 1-3). Longwood also got 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals from Walyn Napper. In addition, Michael Christmas finished with 13 points.
Campbell 69, Hofstra 68
BUIES CREEK — Anthony Dell’Orso had 29 points in Campbell’s 69-68 win over Hofstra on Saturday.
Dell’Orso added 13 rebounds for the Fighting Camels (8-9, 2-2 Coastal Athletic Association). Laurynas Vaistaras scored 20 points and added eight rebounds. Jasin Sinani had eight points.
Tyler Thomas led the way for the Pride (8-9, 1-3) with 23 points and five assists. Hofstra also got 21 points and 14 rebounds from Darlinstone Dubar. In addition, Jacco Fritz finished with nine points and two steals.
Appalachian State 59, James Madison 55
HARRISONBURG, Va. — Myles Tate scored four points in the final 21 seconds and put up 15 points off the bench to spark Appalachian State to a 59-55 victory against James Madison on Saturday night.
Tate also contributed four steals for the Mountaineers (13-4, 4-1 Sun Belt Conference). Justin Abson scored 12 points while shooting 6 of 9 from the field and added eight rebounds with four blocks. Tre’Von Spillers finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Terrence Edwards led the Dukes (15-2, 4-2) with 19 points, four assists and four steals. Xavier Brown added 10 points and five steals for James Madison. In addition, T.J. Bickerstaff had six points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Tate scored seven points in the first half for Appalachian State, who led 30-25 at the break. Appalachian State turned a three-point second-half lead into a 10-point advantage with a 7-0 run to make it a 39-29 lead with 17:01 left in the half. Tate scored eight second-half points in the win.
Appalachian State’s next game is Wednesday against Georgia State at home.
UNC Greensboro 70, Chattanooga 54
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Keyshaun Langley’s 17 points helped UNC Greensboro defeat Chattanooga 70-54 on Saturday night.
Langley added five assists for the Spartans (12-5, 3-1 Southern Conference). Kobe Langley added 15 points with 11 assists and three steals. Donovan Atwell finished with 12.
Trey Bonham led the way for the Mocs (10-7, 2-2) with 25 points and two steals. Honor Huff added 10 points and four steals for Chattanooga.
Charlotte 66, UTSA 58
SAN ANTONIO — Igor Milicic Jr.’s 19 points helped Charlotte defeat UTSA 66-58 on Saturday night.
Milicic was 7-of-11 shooting, including 3 for 7 from 3-point range, for the 49ers (9-7, 3-1 American Athletic Conference). Dishon Jackson added 17 points and also had five rebounds. Isaiah Folkes and Nik Graves both added 10.
The Roadrunners (7-10, 1-3) were led in scoring by Jordan Ivy-Curry, who finished with 20 points. PJ Carter added 13 points for UTSA.
George Washington 83, Davidson 79 (OT)
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Garrett Johnson scored 23 points and Darren Buchanan Jr. added four points in overtime as George Washington defeated Davidson 83-79 on Saturday.
Johnson shot 8 for 16 (5 for 9 from 3-point range) and 2 of 5 from the free throw line for the Revolutionaries (13-3, 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference). James Bishop scored 20 points and added seven assists. Buchanan added 16 points.
Grant Huffman led the Wildcats (10-6, 0-3), finishing with 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Connor Kochera added 14 points and two steals for Davidson. In addition, David Skogman finished with 12 points.
Bishop scored 13 points in the first half and George Washington went into the break trailing 44-39. George Washington used a 7-0 second half run to erase a five-point deficit and take the lead at 46-44 with 18:58 left in the half before finishing off the victory. Johnson scored 13 second-half points.
Drexel 89, Elon 69
ELON — Mate Okros scored 22 points as Drexel beat Elon 89-69 on Saturday night.
Okros shot 7 for 10, including 6 for 8 from beyond the arc, for the Dragons (12-6, 5-0 Coastal Athletic Association). Amari Williams scored 17 points and added six rebounds. Luke House had 13 points.
The Phoenix (8-9, 1-3) were led in scoring by Rob Higgins, who finished with 18 points and four assists. Sam Sherry added 13 points and two blocks for Elon. LA Pratt had 12 points.
