App State hits the road for Old Dominion matchup

Coach Shawn Clark and his 3-3 Mountaineer team are looking to notch another conference win after falling short to Coastal Carolina on Oct. 10 in a 27-24 home loss. Appalachian State’s newest conference test is a road trip to Virginia to face the Old Dominion Monarchs, who are also 3-3 this season and fresh off a 17-13 win over Southern Miss.

The Mountaineers have had success against ODU in the past — even dating back to as recently as 2022 — and have a chance to move up in the Sun Belt Conference standings after splitting their first two conference games this year.

Players to Watch

App State quarterback Joey Aguilar — The Mountaineers’ junior quarterback has been nothing short of impressive in his first season leading his team’s offense. Aguilar has now logged over 1,500 passing yards in six games and has back-to-back 300-yard-plus performances. With a completion percentage of 70%, the Antioch, CA, native has provided App State consistent production despite some occasional turnover issues.

ODU running back Kadarius Calloway — While the junior rushing threat is one of five running backs on the team to handle snaps, he has flourished in a lead-back role with over 12 yards-per-carry. Facing an App State defense ranked 115th in the nation at stopping the run, Calloway has an opportunity to give the Monarchs a reliable ground threat to bolster the pace of the whole offense.
