GREENVILLE, N.C. Residents of Pitt County are to be aware of the telephone scam circulating the community regarding jury duty. The North Carolina Administrative Offices of the Court has informed Pitt County officials that citizens were recently targeted. Scammers, misrepresenting themselves as law enforcement or court officials, are calling citizens with the fraudulent claim that they have missed jury duty and are required to pay a fine to avoid arrest. Staff members of the courts and law enforcement officials will never contact citizens by telephone or email and ask for money, or any sensitive personal or financial information such as Social Security or credit card numbers.Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspected scammer activity to the Pitt County Sherriff’s Office at 252.902.2800. Residents who have been target by the scammers may also report it to the N.C. Attorney General’s Office by calling for toll-free help at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
