N.C. unemployment rate creeps up in July

RALEIGH – North Carolina’s seasonally-adjusted July unemployment rate was 8.5%, increasing 1 percentage point from June’s revised rate. The national rate decreased by just under 1 point to 10.2%, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce.

Seasonally adjusted total nonfarm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, increased 57,200 to 4,286,300 in July. Government, hospitality, transportation, education, and construction industries all experienced gains but manufacturing experienced a decrease.

N.C.’s July 2020 unemployment rate increased by 4.6% from a year ago.

The N.C. Division of Employment Security announced that beginning Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020, NC DES will no longer accept weekly certifications for unemployment benefits by phone. Weekly certifications must be submitted online at the NC DES website.
