UNC Asheville, Charlotte win; Elon, Campbell drop conference games

HIGH POINT — Nate Johnson had a career-high 29 points as Gardner-Webb narrowly defeated High Point 79-76 in overtime on Thursday night.

Gardner-Webb (7-11, 3-3 Big South Conference) opened the overtime period with a 13-5 run and held on as High Point scored the final five points of the game.

John-Michael Wright’s four-point play gave High Point (5-15, 2-5) the lead with 2:37 left in the first half and the Panthers stayed in front until Johnson’s 3-pointer with 28 seconds left in the second half tied it at 66. Wright missed a 3-point attempt at the end of regulation.

Jose Perez had 17 points for Gardner-Webb. Jaheam Cornwall added 13 points. Eric Jamison Jr. had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Wright scored a season-high 31 points and had six rebounds for the Panthers. Denny Slay II added 12 points. Eric Coleman Jr. had 10 points.

Gardner-Webb faces Charleston Southern at home on Saturday. High Point faces Longwood at home on Saturday.

Marrow scores 37 to lift Hampton past Campbell

HAMPTON, Va. — Jermaine Marrow had a season-high 37 points as Hampton defeated Campbell 83-74 on Thursday night.

Ben Stanley had 21 points for Hampton (9-10, 4-2 Big South Conference). Greg Heckstall added 14 points. Marrow also had seven assists. Hampton shot 54 percent, including 5 of 12 from the arc.

Cory Gensler had 16 points for the Fighting Camels (11-9, 2-6). Ja’Cor Nelson added 14 points and five assists. Cedric Henderson Jr. had 12 points. Campbell was 10 of 22 from the arc but was 10 of 14 at the line while Hampton made 22 of 35 free throws.

Hampton plays Radford on the road on Saturday. Campbell plays High Point at home next Thursday.

Young’s 24 points rallies Charlotte past FAU

CHARLOTTE — Jahmir Young matched his season high with 24 points and Jordan Shepherd made a layup with 44 seconds left to give Charlotte the lead en route to a 70-68 win over Florida Atlantic on Thursday night.

Later in the final minute, Shepherd hit two free throws, Drew Edwards made one of two and Young also made one of two as the 49ers preserved their lead. It was Young’s only miss in 10 free-throw attempts.

FAU’s final 3-point attempt — a 30-footer by Cornelius Taylor — was off the mark.

Shepherd finished with 13 points and Malik Martin added 12 for Charlotte (11-7, 5-2 Conference USA), which has won six straight at home.

Taylor had 16 points for the Owls (12-8, 4-3). Jailyn Ingram added 14 points and Richardson Maitre scored 13.

Charlotte rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit as FAU led 58-44 with 7 minutes, 37 seconds remaining. A 13-0 run drew the 49ers within 58-57 with 4:18 to go and they tied it nearly four minutes later when Edwards hit a 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining.

Charlotte faces Florida International at home on Saturday. Florida Atlantic plays at Old Dominion on Saturday.

Towson wins 5th straight by beating Elon

ELON — Brian Fobbs scored 12 of his 20 points in the second half as Towson pulled away from Elon 72-61 on Thursday night.

Jason Gibson added 13 points for Towson (11-9, 5-3 Colonial Athletic Conference), which won a fifth straight. Juwan Gray and Allen Betrand had 10 points each.

Dennis Tunstall added six points, seven rebounds and his three blocked shots pushed him past 100 for his career. Tunstall picked up blocks No. 100 and 101 on the same series, swatting away shots by Elon’s Hunter Woods and Kris Wooten with about 30 seconds remaining.

Woods had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Phoenix (5-16, 1-7). Marcus Sheffield II added 15 points. Zac Ervin had 14 points.

Elon led 28-26 at the break and the second half was tight until Fobbs drained a 3-pointer as part of an 11-0 Tigers run with 3:36 remaining. Elon didn’t get closer than five the rest of the way.

Towson takes on William & Mary on the road on Saturday. Elon faces James Madison at home on Saturday.

UNC Asheville snaps home streak, shoots past Radford

ASHEVILLE — Tajion Jones hit a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored a season-high 29 points as UNC Asheville beat Radford 80-67. Jones knocked down 7 of 11 shots from long range and was 9 of 14 from the field.

LJ Thorpe added 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds and DeVon Baker had 15 points for the Bulldogs (9-9, 3-4 Big South Conference), which snapped a four-game home losing streak.

Travis Fields Jr. scored a season-high 20 points for the Highlanders (10-9, 5-2). Carlik Jones added 18 points and six rebounds. Devine Eke had 13 points and eight rebounds.

UNC Asheville matches up against South Carolina Upstate on the road on Saturday. Radford takes on Hampton at home on Saturday.
