RALEIGH — Second Amendment Sanctuary measures, which are sweeping across the country, have now been adopted by 12 counties in North Carolina, with more lining up to join them.

A resolution aimed at protecting the rights of citizens to keep and bear arms is being considered at the Gaston County Board of Commissioners. If passed, it would be the 13th North Carolina gun sanctuary county.

“I’m proud to sponsor a resolution making Gaston County a Second Amendment sanctuary. I look forward to signing below once it’s passed by our board,” Gaston County Commission Chair Tracy Philbeck tweeted along with an image of the resolution.

The resolution reads in part that the board of commissioners will “oppose, within the limits of the Constitutions of the United States and the State of North Carolina, any efforts to unconstitutionally restrict Second Amendment Rights” or help any law enforcement agency or entity to do so.

The commissioners are set to vote Jan. 28 on the resolution.

Similar resolutions have been approved by Beaufort, Cherokee, Cleveland, Davidson, Lincoln, McDowell, Pitt, Rowan, Rutherford, Stokes, Surry and Wilkes counties. Randolph and Stanly counties are considering similar resolutions.

On Jan. 14, the North Carolina House Republican Caucus issued a letter supporting the Second Amendment Sanctuary movement that was signed by 50 state representatives.
