RALEIGH — No. 2 North Carolina and No. 12-ranked Wake Forest were selected by the NCAA Division I Baseball Selection Committee as regional hosts on Sunday night. Play is expected begin on Friday. The field of 64 teams and regional pairings for the 2017 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, will be announced live on ESPN2 on Monday at noon ET. “We couldn’t be more excited to be hosting a regional in Winston-Salem. Special thanks to all those who made it happen especially our players and staff for the hard work and dedication that made this possible.” head coach Tom Walter said. “Any team can put together a great year and compete in the NCAA Tournament. However, it takes a great program to host an NCAA Regional and compete in the NCAA Tournament in back to back years. This is a watershed moment for our program. We can’t wait to showcase David F. Couch Ballpark and our team to the world.”Earlier in the day, North Carolina lost to Florida State 7-3 in the ACC Baseball championship game. The Tar Heels are 47-12 overall and 23-7 in the ACC. Wake Forest currently sits at 39-18 overall after going 19-11 in ACC play. The Demon Deacons have set program record in ACC wins (19), ACC series wins (eight), home runs (96) and strikeouts (498).The ACC led all conferences with five host sites, as UNC Chapel Hill and Wake Forest are joined by Clemson, Florida State, and Louisville. Davidson and UNC Greensboro have automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament due to conference titles. N.C. State is projected to make the field, but the Wolfpack’s fate will be announced on Monday.
