Codi Miller-McIntyre’s basketball career didn’t get exiled to Siberia after going undrafted in 2016.
But it came close.
The former Wake Forest point guard played last season for Parma Basket in Russia’s VTB United League, a team based in the city of Perm — an important Ural Mountain hub on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
After earning league all-star status by averaging eight assists per game, Miller-McIntyre has returned home in hopes of earning a spot on an NBA roster this season. And he’s making a strong case with his play in the league’s Las Vegas summer tournament.
Playing for the Toronto Raptors, Miller-McIntyre scored eight points, to go along with eight assists, five steals and and four rebounds in 27 minutes Monday in a 92-82 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Although his team is 0-3 in the Summer League thus far, Miller-McIntyre has been a standout by averaging 9.0 points, 5.7 assists and 3.3 steals per game while shooting 11 of 24 from the floor. He described his role with the summer team to Raptors.com as “playing defense, getting my teammates involved, getting downhill, getting into the paint and just keep doing it.”
While Miller-McIntyre will have several more games to keep impressing the Raptors or another team willing to sign him, one of the biggest names among those with North Carolina ties won’t be seeing anymore action in Vegas.
Marvin Bagley III, the second player taken in last month’s draft, has been shut down for the remainder of the two-week tournament after an MRI performed Monday revealed a pelvic bone bruise. The Duke one-and-done big man suffered the injury during the Sacramento Kings’ loss to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday.
Bagley had 15 points and seven rebounds in that game.
Among those that played on Monday, Raleigh native Jerome Robinson had the best game with 14 points and five rebounds for the Los Angeles Clippers in a 104-90 loss to the Houston Rockets. Robinson, who played his college ball at Boston College, was the Clippers’ first round draft pick.
Undrafted free agent Trevon Duval of Duke has 12 points and three assists for the Rockets in the game.
Other performances of note belonged to Duke’s Amile Jefferson, who continued his double-digit rebounding pace by pulling down 12 boards for the Minnesota Timberwolves in a win against the Brooklyn Nets. Raleigh’s Devonte Graham (Kansas), who handed out six assists for the Charlotte Hornets in a loss to Boston and Shelby native Gabe DeVoe (Clemson), who made the most of his seven minutes of playing time with the Hornets by scoring eight points in just seven minutes of action.
NC State’s Terry Henderson also made a contribution to the Charlotte win with seven points, three rebounds and a steal.
