The East Carolina basketball team hasn’t lost since Michael Perry took over as interim coach following Jeff Lebo’s resignation last Wednesday.
Among the many catalysts for that success was redshirt freshman Shawn Williams.
A 6-foot guard who was ruled academically ineligible by the NCAA last season, Williams came off the bench to average 13.5 points in wins against UNC Wilmington and Delaware State. For his efforts, he was selected by the American Athletic Conference as its men’s basketball Rookie of the Week.
Williams scored 15 points in 21 minutes of the Pirates’ overtime win against UNCW on Thursday before hitting for 12 points, including the clinching free throws, Saturday against Delaware State.
ECU also beat Campbell on Monday.
Joining Williams on this week’s AAC honor roll is senior teammate B.J. Tyson, who scored a career-high 30 points in UNCW game. He averaged 19.5 points in the two wins while playing 79 of a possible 85 minutes.
SMU’s Shake Milton, the AAC’s preseason Player of the Year, was this week’s Player of the Week. It was the second time he’s earned the award this season.
