East Carolina has announced several changes to its football schedule in a collective effort by the American Athletic Association to make up for recent postponements caused by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

Instead having an open date next weekend as originally scheduled, the Pirates will now travel to East Hartford to play UConn on Sunday (Sept. 24) at noon. The game will played on Sunday because the Huskies’ Pratt & Whitney Stadium is not available that Saturday.

ECU’s open date will now be on Saturday, Oct. 28, the day it was supposed to have played Houston. That game, at the Cougars’ TDECU Stadium, will be pushed back a week and played on Nov. 4 — the date the Pirates would originally have played UConn.

The Pirates are one of five AAC teams whose schedules are being altered because of the storms that devastated both Florida and South Texas over the past few weeks. Coach Scottie Montgomery’s team will be at home this Saturday, seeking its first win of the season against Virginia Tech.

“I would like to thank our presidents, athletic directors and our head football coaches for their outstanding collaboration and cooperation to resolve this unprecedented situation in as fair a manner as possible,” AAC commissioner Mike Aresco said in a statement. “I would also like to acknowledge and thank Ryan Bamford from UMass for his understanding. This was not an easy process, but we feel that this updated schedule is a significant step toward giving us the best opportunity to decide our champion on the field.”
