Defending national runnerup Duke fell short in its bid to return to the NCAA women’s soccer Final Four, dropping a 1-0 decision to top seeded West Virginia in the tournament’s quarterfinal round. The Blue Devils outshot the Mountaineers 17-12 and earned 10 corners to only six for their opponent, but they weren’t able to match a goal by West Virginia’s Alli Magaletta off a corner kick just 16 minutes into the game. Duke’s best chance to get the equalizer came in the 53rd minute when a header by Imani Dorsey beat Mountaineers goalie Rylee Foster, but clanged off the post. West Virginia advances to next Saturday’s national semifinal against North Carolina in San Jose, Calif. Southern Cal and Georgetown will meet in the other semifinal. Duke finishes its season at 15-5-3.
