The U.S. Geological Survey said a 2.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in western North Carolina Tuesday morning near Hot Springs, northwest of Asheville. The report on the earthquake on the USGS site said it occurred 6.1 kilometers (3.7 miles) beneath the surface. The Citizen-Times reported the temblor could be felt in downtown Asheville, but no damage was reported.
