Big South Tournament: UNCA tops Campbell, will face Gardner-Webb; High Point loses

Gardner-Webb topped UNC Asheville 70-56 in their only meeting this season

ASHEVILLE — Coty Jude registered 19 points as UNC Asheville narrowly beat Campbell 72-68 in the first round of the Big South Conference tournament on Tuesday night.

No. 6 seed UNC Asheville (15-15) plays third-seeded Gardner-Webb in Thursday’s quarterfinals at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Virginia.

LJ Thorpe added 14 points for the Bulldogs. DeVon Baker added 14 points and seven rebounds. Lavar Batts Jr. had 11 points.

Tajion Jones, whose 14 points per game heading into the matchup was second on the Bulldogs, scored just six points on 1-of-7 shooting.

Cedric Henderson Jr. had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Fighting Camels (15-16). Cory Gensler added 13 points and six rebounds. Trey Spencer had eight rebounds.

Hammond, USC Upstate knock out High Point

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Everette Hammond had 23 points as South Carolina Upstate got past High Point 69-59 in the first round of the Big South Conference tournament on Tuesday night.

Tommy Bruner added 12 points for USC Upstate (13-19). Dalvin White added 12 points.

Nevin Zink had 10 rebounds. The No. 7 seed Spartans play second-seeded Winthrop in Thursday’s quarterfinals at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Virginia.

Jamal Wright had 19 points for the Panthers (9-23). Cliff Thomas Jr. added 12 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks. Rob Peterson III had eight rebounds.

John-Michael Wright, who led the Panthers in scoring entering the contest with 14 points per game, had 7 points on 3-of-13 shooting.
