Mountaineers improve to 4-1 but lose running back Jalin Moore to injury

JONESBORO, Ark. — Darrynton Evans ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries to help Appalachian State beat Arkansas State 35-9 on Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers (4-1, 2-0 Sun Belt Conference) took the lead for good at 14-9 on Zac Thomas’ 25-yard back shoulder pass to Corey Sutton with 2:57 left in the second quarter.

Tae Hayes intercepted Justice Hansen’s pass three plays later and his 19-yard return set up the Mountaineers with a first-and-goal from the 3. Evans’ 1-yard TD run made it 21-9 with 45 seconds left in the half.

Jalin Moore got the Mountaineers on the scoreboard with a 27-yard TD run early in the second quarter. He suffered a right ankle injury while being tackled as he reached for the end zone and was carted off the field.

Blake Grupe made all three of his field-goal attempts, including a career-long 47-yarder that gave the Red Wolves (3-3, 0-2) a 6-0 lead.
