Byes, losses keep local teams out of honors for just second time this year

For the second time this season, no North Carolina teams were honored in the ACC Player of the Week awards. That’s partly due to Duke and North Carolina having the week off and partly because of losses by Wake Forest and NC State.

The Wolfpack lost to Clemson on Saturday and saw two Tigers players win ACC weekly awards. Mitch Hyatt won the Offensive Lineman of the Week after having five knockdown blocks and helping Clemson gain 224 yards on the ground. Clelin Ferrell won Defensive Lineman of the Week after getting 12 tackles and five tackles for loss against the Pack.

It’s only the second and third time that NC State has given up a Player of the Week performance this season. Only Pitt (1) and Miami (0) have surrendered fewer.

Other winners were Florida State running back Cam Akers, who gained 199 yards to win Offensive Back and Rookie of the Week. Syracuse’s Steve Ishmael had 12 catches for 143 yards to win Receiver of the Week. Virginia’s Micah Kiser had 18 tackles to win Linebacker of the Week, and teammate Joe Reed returned a kickoff for a touchdown to earn Specialist of the Week.

Miami’s Jaquan Johnson had a forced fumble and interception to win Defensive Back of the Week.
